The Oh Wow Second Shot
« on: December 29, 2011, 02:50:34 PM »
The brief thread on the ninth at County Down raised a thought that while there are a number of well known Oh Wow tee boxes in golf, the number of Oh Wow second shots that reveal themselves only during the play of a hole seems to be much smaller.  The ninth at County Down is certainly one.  I would also put the second shot on the fourth hole at Bandon Dunes in that category as the fairway turns the green and the ocean suddenly come into view.  Are there other candidates in this category?  Is it most often accomplished with a blind tee shot like County Down versus the fourth at the Dunes?  Is it a feature actively considered in design?  When it occurs as it does in Newcastle and Bandon  it is certainly memorable.

Two I can think of on the same course, off the top of my head are, 13 second or third shot and 16 second shot at Tobacco Road.  Both are similar, but a wow moment, the first time you play them.

Hell, I think the second shot on the 1st hole at Bandon Dunes is an OH WOW shot...it's the first exposure to this resort that many have and it also comes after a turn in the fairway.

I think that the oh wow approach is very common, owed to the creator and the Creator.

There are probably many of these holes, particularly on ocean courses.
Par 4 or par 5 heading to the ocean, or over a rise down to a green site on the ocean.
There are a couple of these on Nicklaus's Kauai Lagoons course -- the 13th and 16th.
I would think NSW #5 would qualify as well.

I love the 2nd shot into the 6th at Lawsonia.

Also, I forget which hole exactly (9th or 18th) on the South Course at Olympia Fields, but there is a great reveal with a green sitting infront of the massive clubhouse.

There are a few great second shots at Northland CC in Duluth with fantastic skyline greens with Lake Superior in the background.

The "great reveal" is a much better way to express what I was trying to say.  The point in your travels from the tee to the ball when something unexpected and memorable presents itself.

The Old Course, hole #17.  It was an "oh wow" moment for me because I didn't realize (or maybe it was I'd never taken the time to consider) how close the road is to the green with OB right over the road.  That plus the road hole bunker being right there and it became apparent just how difficult that second shot is very quickly.

So bad it's good!

The best oh wow moments are those which are in full view, but its still amazing to see the movement of shots.  I can still recall my first go at Huntercombe's 3rd - what an incredulous green site!

7 at Sunningdale -  a blind tee shot up and over a very steep wall of earth to a tumbling fairway and a brilliant green.
16 Kingston Heath - not as good but close.

There is a great reveal on the 2nd hole at Lawsonia, when after a blind tee shot you walk up a hill to find the huge, neat maintenance barn which used to be a dairy barn. I can post a picture when on a desktop later.

The Machrie 7 - Walking over the dune after the completely blind tee shot one is startled by an epicly tumultuous (and broad) fairway  with the beautiful sunken green hidden beneath a beautiful stadium of dunes in the distance.  WOW!

Lahinch 6 - The walk up the hill yields the following treats: a one of a kind chasm bunker, broken steps of fairway, a beautifully contoured and bunkered greens, and the Atlantic ocean.

TOC 17

Dunluce 13 - You do not get a glimpse of anything off the tee, but the hole sports a fantastic Colt greensite

Waterville 11

A big curving par 5. Once past the hulking dunes on the left is the Lake Michigan reveal. It’s the first lakeside hole on the course.  (That being said, I feel that the hole is a bit constricting beyond the drive landing area.)

How about Shinnecock Hills 10 (assuming you hit an iron off the tee)?
