Jeff B.,

For the sake of historical accuracy  ;D, this will not be the first Olympic golf event...

Canadian George Lyon won the gold medal in golf at Glen Echo, in St. Louis, in 1904. Interesting fact, the silver medalist was Chandler Egan. And, I didn't realize this until I just checked to recall the name of the St. Louis club where the event took place, in 1904, but apparently golf was on the program in Paris in 1900 as well.

So, this will be the third Olympic golf event, at Rio.

Hadn't Forest Park in St Louis just opened for a major exposition?

That's a very fun course by the way, wraps around some of the buildings built for that expo.
Who designed the first 2 Olympic venues?

No GOOGLE..

Process of elimination:

Coore and Crenshaw won't bid -- Ben can't sit in a plane that long without having a cigarette.
Dye won't bid -- Pete can't stop mocking/laughing at the idea of Olympic golf long enough to think of a course.
Palmer wont bid -- Arnold knows Brazil ain't close to either Bay Hill Florida or Laurel Valley PA, so he can't have a round with his peeps.
Fazio won't bid -- His legacy is well established, and he doesn't understand whatever the hell language they speak in Brazil
RTJ won't bid -- the last thing he needs is to have an amateur golfer from Kuala Lumpur agreeing with Philly Mick.
Player will bid.

The unwritten Criteria.  Now everyone in the business and any other business that has to go through the RFP process knows that there is the Offical Evaluation Criteria and the "real" criteria we never are told about but is the one that chooses the winner.

Anyone care to take a stab at what they will publish vs what they will actually use?

As far as the 8, my guess is that they will try to have a geographically correct sample, meaning that :
the US will only get 1.
Europe has to get the same,
look for a token from Asia,
one from the Isles (England, Scotland, Ireland),
A Canuck,
an Aussie,
a Mexican and
a homeboy from SA rounding out the pack.
Now they may consider teams to cover multiple locals and allow a couple wild cards (choose from either the US, Africa, or the Isles).

Not wanting to expain who their choices are, they will pick the 8 with the name recognition because it really doesn't matter who 6 of the 8 are.  They just have to maintain the appearance of being fair. Remember, in the final analysis it isn't about the course design.  We here just think (or wish) it is

But in the end I say Jack or Player get's it. Probably Jack on the strength of # of Tournaments held on his courses.

Another reason why Chicago should have gotten the Bid, they already have several of tried and proven tracks.
Coasting is a downhill process

I haven't found anything online that suggests when the final 8 were to be announced...even on thier main website.

So maybe given that Tom thinks the announcement will be today, he must be one of the 8 finalists the inside track!! :)

Phase II -
November 17/18 - Workshop to present project briefing to participants.
Phase III -
From November 19 to December 16 - term set for participants to prepare their proposals.
December 16 - deadline for proposal submission.
December 17 to 23 - the jury will interview the participating firms and carry out a final review of proposals.
December 23 - announcement of the successful candidate.

The real answer is does it really matter who? (except to the architect)

Has the Ryder Cup suffered when played at its' recent Great Britain modern TOP 200 sites?

Jeff:

It probably matters more to the architect than to anyone else.  However, I think it does matter to the world of golf in general, or I wouldn't have made a proposal.

A friend said to me a month ago that there is a lot of pressure on this job, because the success or failure of Rio 2016 is going to determine whether golf stays in the Olympics or not.  [It will also be played in 2020, but they'll decide before 2020 if it's going to continue after that.]

Now, I know some people think the Olympics are bad and golf shouldn't be associated with them.  But, now that it's in, I'd like to see golf put its best foot forward, and perhaps help attract more attention for the game in the countries where it still has room to grow.

P.S.  I have no idea who the eight are going to be -- I've got good guesses for six of them, but as to the others I have no clue.  But, anyone who put down Coore and Crenshaw is not going to get all 8 correct.  Both of them told me they had no intention of submitting a proposal.

I think this is grossly over-estimating the role that the golf course and its design will play in the game of golf's ability to "put its best foot forward" or use the Olympics as a launching point for global growth.

Do more people watch the Ryder Cup depending on the venue/golf course?

These sorts of things matter more to the people on this website than they ever could to the "retail golfer."  If they wanted to maximize viewership for impact on the globe, they'd hold the golf at Augusta National.

JC,

You may be right as to the course's impact, but I wouldn't underestimate either the Olympics impact on the game globally if golf takes hold as an Olympic sport or the possible ratings vs. say the President's Cup...

Two questions on the aerial photo:

Is that site as sandy as it looks?

Is the golf course allowed to go right down to the water?

the big wheel turns by the grace of God.

Tom Bendelow was an official at that St Louis Oly.

It seems one has to imagine which golf group of archies, signature pro, and management company capable of international operations can pull this off, and not to mention who has the social juice and footprint to travel in the circles of the deciders.

One would have to think Nicklaus, Player, The Shark, Faldo, Palmer are the most well situated.  I still think who ever has the most juice with E. Batista gets it.  Just by age and social footprint, Norman or Faldo.  Nicklaus may be too old along with Player, Palmer.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I agree with you.  My point was that, unlike what Tom was saying, I think the golf course will be irrelevant when determining the impact of the Olympics on the game of golf.
