In lieu of the early winter storm this past week, I thought I would post some pictures from my Honeymoon in 2009...don't worry, just GOLF pictures:)

Kapalua Plantation - I really enjoyed my round there.  The course is solid (although a couple head-scratchers) and the views are stunning.  Kapalua has been photographed ad nauseum, but hopefully some of these pictures are different and not necessarily taken from a photo tour perspective.

Makena - Makena is a lot of fun.  Quirky? yes.  Lots of bells and whistles? No.  Good routing and variety?...I think so.  While Makena isn't the epic challenger to Kapalua, it is unique and a blast to play.  I would go back in a heartbeat.

Wailea Gold - This course really surprised me.  I wasn't necessarily looking forward to play a course crammed on the same property as two other courses, but the layout was really impressive given the acreage constraints.  Even though they had just punched the greens, you can see that the condition of the course is excellent...better than Kapalua, although on the opposite side of the island.

The Prince Course at Princeville Resort - I've got to be honest...Prince was a real let down.  For years, it was rated the #1 course in all of Hawaii, so I was naturally very excited to get there and see for myself.  The routing is very odd...I would say the course only has 4-5 world class holes...several holes go through condos/housing...and you can see for yourself the condition of the course.  The holes that were good were very good.  However, the rest of the course just seemed less than special...not memorable at all.  Maybe I played the course on the wrong day in the wrong conditions, but I was underwhelmed and that is putting it nicely.  That being said, the location is a 10.

Anyway, enjoy:)  BTW, don't shoot the messenger, but it is 71 and sunny in Tampa today!

Nice pictures.  I think Kapalua Plantation is the only course worth playing in Maui  with the possible exception of The Dunes at Maui Lani.  Otherwise I think time in Maui is better spent doing other things.

BTW, It's 75 and sunny in Los Angeles, so there.

Thanks Frank.   How did the lost ball count compare at each course?  What are the head scratchers at Kapalua?

what time of year did you play princeville?  Keep in mind that the north shore of Kauai gets over 300 inches of rain per year so the standards of maintainence are quite different than even other hawaiian courses.

Sometimes we like to think that conditioning doesn't detract from our perceptions of a golf course but you sure caught Princeville at a bad time. I never thought it was the best course in Hawaii but think it is pretty awesome.

Has anyone played King Kamehameha on Maui?

Did you look at the pictures  :) I am quite sure it wasn't overly wet based on the brown.

Princeville is the course I was the most disappointed with in my life.

I had a coworker recommend it but after looking at the aerials and price, I opted for another Plantation course round.

I've played King Kam several times and enjoyed it. If you like level lies look elsewhere because the entire course is on the side of the mountain.

I'll part company here. I'd just stay in Wailea and play those three and the two at Makena, even though they are inferior to the Plantation course. Why?  The weather is so much better in Wailea than Kapalua. Hotels great too. Take one day to play Plantation and go back to Wailea. The Bay and Village are quite avoidable IMHO.

Mark, to each his own, certainly...the course (minus the conditioning) just didn't feel special...I know there are people that love the course and people who believe it is overrated...and believe me, I went into the round "ready" to love it.  It was probably the most disappointing round at a highly rated course I have experienced.

Sean, you're right, it was dry as a bone.

Jason - I know you asked for Franks input (maybe because you know each other and you trust his opinion) but wanted to provide my input on the head scratchers at Kapalua.  While I think the course is darn good after reading Ran compare it to and beat Muirfield on a hole by hole basis I had really high expectations that weren't met.  Maybe people will be able to tell me what I missed and why things I didn't appreciate aren't that important.

The experience started less than ideal as the range wasn't open prior to my 808 tee time.  There were at least three other groups that went off before me.  I usually love walking from the car to the first tee but I hadn't played for some time, this was the first round of the trip, and I arrived an hour early with the expectation to hit the range.  Obviously not a knock on the course but still something I scratched my head about.

On the first tee I wasn't sure what line to take and prefer a little more straightforward opening tee shot where I can see the landing area.  I hit the fairway and drove to my ball.  That was essentially the experience of the first hole as they rope off the fairway over 100 yards from the green and before a gully.  The cart path takes you way out of the way where you can't see anything but wall of Jungle and entry road until you reach the green.  I understand I chose the cart in lieu of caddie and a caddie would make that complaint mute.  The other side of my complaint is the cart path doesn't come into play (despite the fact that I drove by at least 10 balls just off the path) and certainly isn't in camera view during tourney time.

2-4 were ok holes, but what is the purpose of the first bunker on the right that that is at most 160 yards to carry.  They look nice...I guess.

I thought 5 was the best hole on the front 9.  But after my favorite hole my least favorite feature of the course occurred and basically deflated my enthusiasm.  The drive from 5 to 6 is literally a half mile drive.  I guess for spectator purposes and shuttling players for the PGA event they no kidding needed to put a mini runway between these holes.  When I got to 6 I hit my worst drive of the day and ended up happy to be in one of the bunkers short right just over the carry that I normally wonder who the purpose of the bunkers as I figure no one ends up in them.  The approach into 6 is tough but fun.  We all smiled as we watched our balls land well short and either roll well past the hole or down to the right of the green.

7-9 were good holes

I don't mind the long drive between 9s.

I thought 10 and 11 were both good holes but to me I felt 10-14 were a bit crowded in an effort to get the amazing backdrop they did for the 11th.  It just seemed really crowded/busy in the 10 green, 11 tee, 13 green and 14 tee area.

12-14 ok
15 - I thought was a bit on the severe side.
16 I honestly don't remember playing this hole even after reviewing my photos (probably fuming after hitting multiple shots on 15 from essentially the same spot after leaving approaches short of the green - this experience is only part of what I was referring to in calling the hole severe).
17 - my favorite hole on the back 9.
18 - good long hole to finish.

In my mind overall a darn good course considering the severity of the site, but the caveat is stated for a reason.

The Village course and Makena south closed about 5 years ago. Both were supposed to be remade into private courses but those deals fell thru.

I've had a long love affair with Kapalua and can't imagine a trip to Maui without at least one round on both the Plantation and the Bay courses.  I think the renovations on the Bay course have really improved the product there and while it may not be the most architecturally brilliant course on the island the golf experience makes it easily worth while.

Thanks for the analysis. I really appeciate specific thoughts about a course. I will need to refrsh my memory to see to what extent I agree or disagree but will do so.

What's with those pine trees at Kapalua?  Are they indigenous?  They look ridiculous, especially on the 17th hole with the ocean backdrop.

It was kind of windy the day I played the Plantation

Kyle,

Love those pictures. The picture at Wailea is actually the 1st hole of the Emerald course.

Frank,
Glad to hear Wailea Gold surprised you. I personally love that course. When I had a chance to play golf, I chose the Gold course over 50% of the time. (Keep in mind I was also on that side of the island). Wailea has a great staff and club among the 3 courses (and the best weather, too). For people who have not played it, the pictures do it no justice.

Interested to know more regarding Makena. When I played it last March(?), some of the holes you have posted pictures of were not open. I know that first hole was not, and I do not remember the next 2 holes. The first hole in the picture gallery I remember is the par 3 with the kidney-shaped green (the 4th hole if I remember correctly).

The 1st hole you have a picture of runs west toward the ocean from the clubhouse. The opening hole when I played it was a par 4 that runs to the north of the clubhouse. I guess they have incorporated the a couple holes from the south course into the north course?
