Best Setting in Golf?

I was thinking on this cold day in NYC with the new year ahead of me, "Where would I most want to be sitting having a pint and looking at the golf course I just played?"  The answer came out before I thought about it, Cruden Bay in the clubhouse sipping a Tennant's overlooking Slain's Castle and the dunes where the Scots fought the Danes and where I fought with my swing.  Of course, I would not want to be playing there right now considering it is probably 20 degrees but it definitely brings a smile to my face.

What setting in golf do you dream of being in?

Jeff,

Teeing off in the afternoon on the first hole at NGLA,
after just having played a good round in the morning with some friends, enjoying the fast and firm conditions, and a good breeze, all on a warm summer day.     :)

Sticking true to my roots, I'm telling you guys, the north shore of Prince Edward Island is impressive. It's just too bad Eddie Hackett didn't get the Crowbush Cove gig  ;D

Jeff, that spot doing exactly the same is on my short list. there is a bench near the 17th gree on TOC that has my name on it for a Tennants after a wonderful round on TOC. I love the bench at I believe the 3rd tee at Dornoch. There is a bench around the 6th tee at Gullane 1 which overlooks the ferth, Muirfield and the Gullane courses. Pebble has one of the best in the tap room and spanish bay is none to shabby either. the halfway house at Monterey Pen CC is just wonderful too. The halfway house at Turnberry. Crail is one of the best along with Kingsbarns. I am very fond of the cluhouse at Maclahanish too. I guess you are talking to a man who likes a beer with a view after a great round of golf. Happy New Years to one and all.

Pat Mucci has second best idea.  Best idea is watching him finish that round sitting on the side porch of the clubhouse with a drink and a view of the 18th hole, Peconic Bay beyond and the setting sun.

Admittedly, there are many other possibilities almost as good.

On this cold winter day, I'm thinking of standing on the 18th at Kapalua Plantation with the trades behind you--I'm the king of the world!

And the tropical drinks at the clubhouse a little bit later as the sun sets over Lanai aren't bad either...

There is nothing like teeing off on a beautiful blue sky morning in early January at Cypress point. Looking directly into the sun the path is well defined, if you trust your caddie. When you cross the road not only the anticipation of whats to come but what is unfolding before you, is absolute magic.

Standing on the 14th tee at Valley Club of Montecito, looking at the 14th green perfectly lined up with the 1st green and that wonderful Norman clubhouse off in the distance. What a great view!

Or standing at the brink of the chasm on the 8th at Pebble, glad to be nimble and alive!

Happy New Year! Though I've been fortunate to have experienced most of those listed so far my choice remains the same as it has always been - Sand Hills Golf Club, Ben's Porch as the sun sets casting outerworldly shadows, spirit of choice in hand.

From my limited experience I'd have to agree with both Adam and Gene -- Cypress Point followed closely by Sand Hills.

I see someone has selected a porch, specially Ben's porch at Sand Hills.  Who can argue with that?

But, what about a dining room......in the evening during the summer time?

For that, I'll nominate the Turnberry Hotel.  Turnberry will never be my favorite course, but that is quite a glorious setting, especially if you get the right table and seat looking out over the course.

I'll take the ninth tee at Royal County Down on a clear
and sunshiny day. ;D

Since so few of those exist, I'll also take the 16th tee
at Cypress Point.  ;)

Forget the Tennants, a nice gin and tonic in the Big Room at the R&A or on the back patio at Cypress Point.

Between Cypress Point and Spyglass there is a horse trail running up along the dunes. Sitting up there you can see Cypress #8 down below, and #9 green off to the left. You can look up #'s 1, 13, and 14. It is glorious! Unfortunately there are very few golfers to watch. I have sat there for an hour before without seeing a golfer! You can walk down the horse trail towards the woods and be alongside #7 and see #6 also. The best part is all this is open to the public and I rarely venture onto 17 mile drive without going up on those du
nes to get re-energized.

The "halfway" house at MPCC is a lovely place to have a bite and soak in the scenery also I would agree.

I'll third Ben's Porch at Sand Hills.

A side note to Kapalua. I was there for week last December.The view from the terrace at the Plantation course is out of this world, but the view from the pool at the Ritz-Carlton across the road, at night, all the palm tree's decked out in lights, hawaiin holiday music in the background, a nice breeze blowing, 75 degrees, your out walking in shorts and you know it's 10 degree's back home. There is no better setting!! What I'd give for that again!

 The tee at #8 at the Experience @ Koele. Although I'm not a huge fan of the course this may be (imo) the most beautiful hole, sans major water, on the planet. Being from upstate NY, and in early January, may also sway me to a Hawaiian course.

I would hav to say that my perfect setting of golf would be putting the bag on my shoulder and walking Pinehurst Number 2 early one foggy morning....if not that maybe just some public 20 dollar course with a case of beer and a ride home

Golfing,
     Your perfect day at #2 is not possible (at this time) as walking and carrying is not allowed.  The only walking allowed is with a caddie.  Maybe if you snuck on and started at hole #2...

Post Round Drink - 2nd floor dining room at Ballybunion (even better than Cruden Bay)
Lunch Between Rounds - Muirfield clubhouse (edging out the patio tables of the Jigger Inn overlooking the Road Hole)

Parking behind the third tee at Wannamoisett, putting your shoes on in the parking lot while gazing at that beautiful little par three, and being ovewhelmed with the anticipation of the round on that golf course!
