Extra/19th Hole
« on: November 15, 2011, 11:11:03 AM »
Inspired by the comments regarding the "Spare Hole" at New South Wales, I searched for a topic regarding the "Extra" or "19th" hole.  I stumbled upon an older (2004) thread regarding this, but decided to start fresh and in a different direction.

Have you (the Architect) ever built or wanted to build an extra hole or 19th hole because it fit perfectly into a routing plan and would be a fantastic hole?  Not for maintenance or to settle a bet, but because to not build it would be a waste or abuse of the land.

Does the number "18" constrain you or push you?

Off the top of my head.  Don't know the reasoning behind the Weiskopf holes, but Building Sebonack by Brad Klein has a great story on its 19th hole.  Great book for anyone interested - definitely one of the best written on a modern course.

Knollwood Country Club in Westchester has a 19th hole. When Seth Raynor was working on the course in the mid-1920s his 18th hole finished about 200 yards from the clubhouse so instead of changing the home hole he built a 19th hole to get players back to the clubhouse.

Forest Creek South, I think because it fit the routing.

Old Sandwich outside of Boston has a 19th hole. I did not play the 19th but was told the 19th hole exists primarily for matches that go past regulation.  It is a unique par 3 hole that is accessible after the 10th and 18th holes so a match that starts on #1 or #10 can reach the 19th easily.  However, the hole plays from a different set of tees should you finish after #10 as opposed to #18.

I tried to show the routing in a simple Google Map, I hope the attachment worked.

Lost Farm can do one better. It has two extra holes:  13a and 18a.

Stone Eagle has a nifty Par 3 19th in front of the restaurant...great way to end a round of golf there.

Interestingly, The Trophy Club (IN) has a Par 3 19th as well....however, I believe it was part of the original 18....not sure why they took it out of the original routing....it is a good one.

Prior to the building of Augusta National, Jones, Roberts and Dr. Mackenzie met at Robert's club, Knollwood , to discuss the building of the course. One topic of discussion was the addition of a "bye hole ". Knollwood had such a hole that Raynor had incorporated into Knollwood'd routing and it was wee received by the members. At that meeting, Jones and Roberts were on board with it and Mackenzie incorporated one into his first routing plan. It was to be called, " DOUBLE OR QUITS HOLE" . It was a 100 yard hole with the tee just to the left of the 18th green and played up the hill to about where the practice green is now. Charley Price later wrote that Jones nixed the idea after much thought, saying it " interfered with the symmetry of the course because it was too dispropotionate and out of harmony with the classicism he was after".
So, that's the story on how ANGC almost had their bye hole.

The European Club has 20 holes.

Two short holes between 7 and 8 and 12 and 13 if I remember correctly...

Two of my favorites are LACC North

and Old Sandwich...

I really enjoyed the 19th at Sebonack and banged one off the pin at Kinloch's 19th this year.  That would have been a bittersweet hole in one.

The European Club's two spare holes (7a and 13a) are fantastic in that they are located in a way that there is no lengthy walk between holes whether you play them or skip them.

Both really good holes, too.

Frank-
That is a fun shot.
I don't know how that hole could have ever been part of the original 18 - it's fully cut off from the rest of the course by 18 fairway.  Unless it was the original 18, which seems unlikely given that the tee is closer than the green to the clubhouse.
Funny thing is that virtually no one actually completes the hole.  In roughly 20 rounds out there,  I've yet to see someone walk around the pond to actually go retrieve the ball, much less putt out.  People seem to treat it like a post-round donation.

Would Blackthorn's Blarney hole fit Joe's question?

Raynor died during construction and Banks built most of the holes including the 18th.

The 19th was actually created by the pro, who envisioned the hole. Banks may have helped, but I have nothing that ties him to the project.

There is a fantastic write up about LACC North and it's recent renovation.  You may down load it from the club's website.  It has a great story behind "Little 17" which is pictured above.  Thanks KYLE!!!

At least one group of us Dixie Cuppers actually played the 19th at Kinloch. Fun little par 3 over water.
