I found these pics on the internet through Geoff Shackleford's Twitter account; They make me wonder?: How penal is this golf course?

And: Can Fescue grass have this colour in October?

Cristian,

fescue can be very green whilst it is getting established which I suspect is the case here.

I also hope that further pictures show an improvement. Only three photographs, but hopefully some holes play over/through the dunes.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this course, I know all the locals we met in Aberdeen were really excited by it.

If this is the response to 3 grainy pictures, remind me to never post construction / grow-in photos of any course I'm working on...

The 3rd looks like it could be really good...

Incidentally, 6 is quite short so I'm sure it isn't as penal as you may think from one photo...Looks like the left side of green is obscured for those who like a little blindness... 14 is teeing from up high so that's wider than it looks as well...

Anthony,

You ask "Is it me or does it look like you could let loose and lose a lot of balls there?"

No it is not just you. I reckon with my loose swing I would lose a bucket load of balls and then lose my temper. I must never be let loose on this course......send me on to Cruden Bay.  I bet Bill Brightly would love this course provided he starts out with nine balls in his golf bag!

Cheers Colin

If that last hole is typical I think the real hazard is the elevated tees rather than supposed lack of fairway width or depth of rough. Elevated tees just accetuate any waywardness, especially if there's any wind.......does it get windy in Aberdeen ?

 ;D 8) ;D

Interesting Niall ttalked about the difficulty of elevated tees . Give me an uphill tee shot or one out of a cove anyday. The minds eye is just unable to see the shot from the elevated tee like it can fro terra firma.  Combine that with the vagaries of dealing with wind fro maltitude and it makes for a very hard shot.

My guessis is that the playing areas at Aberdeen are quite large, and the photos probaby don't capture this . Sand HIlls is far bigger in person than it appears in photographs ..

Having played quite regularly at one of Hawtree's original designs (Tarandowah, outside London, Ont.) I'd say he's not a huge fan of fairway width, and likes having bunkers in the line of play, making fairways seem more narrow than they actually are. That said, this place looks damned tight to me.

It wouldn't surprise me if they used fertilizer. With Trump's reputation, it's probably a high expectations situation demanding quick results.

Fraser showed me around Castle Stuart shortly before its opening. He seemed pleasant and well-versed in the ways of great GCA.

Those are some great looking photos.  I don't think the rough will be worse than some of the other headline courses; which this surely set to be.  As long as you can see any narrow landing areas off the tee at least you will have a sight line on the point of entry.  It would seem that a lot of tee shots are indeed elevated giving a good view of the hole.

Most eagerly awaited opening for how long??  I know everyone was justifiably pumped up for Castle Stuart and Old Mac on the other side of the Atlantic but the non-golfing population are all over this too

Like it or not, all off course distractions aside, this looks to be very special indeed.
