Lookaway golf club

Had a chance to rate and play this beautiful course yesterday. Great closing hole, anyone have any opinions about the quality of the course??  There are some really great holes on this course and the greens were quick and true.

Hard to believe Harry, but there are many courses in the Delaware Valley I've not photo-documented.  I might be approaching 40% or so, but I hope to get them all within the next decade.

I think it is a fine closing hole. We played it into a 30 mph wind and it was alot to handle. I just think it looks great and plays fairly. I would like another shot at it without the wind. I had heard it was done well and i agree. While not a killer like the 18th at Merion I thought it was well done and fits the land well.

I thought the bunkering was fair and well placed.The bunkers on 4 present a psychological aspect to the drive on that hole. While some do not come into play elsewhere they frame the holes and the shots well. The hidden bunker on 8 was very well done and added something to that hole.

All in all i think it is a good layout.

Ed,

18, even without the wind, is another of the more difficult closing holes in the area- Merion, Cricket Wissahickon, Commonwealth, etc.

I'm just not a big fan of the style of bunkering at Lookaway.

The course is, however, a good walk in the park.

Steve,
I guess i look at holes with a view of playing them in a GAP match in April. Both guys 155 out, hole cut tight against the front of the green. Match is tied or you are one down.  Do you challenge the designer and opponent by going at it or go for the center of the green and hope you two putt. Agreed it's not a killer but it is a very good hole. Makes you think.

There's a very similar looking  uphill 4par at LedgeRock near Reading. I think it's 17.

You are correct but Ledgerock is longer. With a good drive you still have 175-185 left in on Ledgerocks 17th. Alot of similarity between them both, and i believe they are both Rees Jones designs, correct??

Yes, both are Rees Jones creations  in eastern PA . The others are  Broad Run and Huntsville. He was busy here for awhile.

The routing is awkward.

The main issue with Lookaway is that the shaping in general fights the land, or absolutely robs the land of the character it had before hand.

For example, the area in front of the third green is shaped and built above the natural grade by anywhere from four to eight feet - meaning a right-to-left slope was both raised and leveled in the approach. There is a basin right that collects and moves water under the built up bridge to the left. Simply by not touching this area and leaving the aboriginal topography Rees could have placed a premium on an aggressive approach.

Examples of pillaging the topography of this natural topography abound on the golf course though there are some individual instances of fine holes like the fourth.
