Good points, David, which further illustrates that we're all here for different reasons. I'd much rather discuss a course I've played with the archie, even if it's a relative unknown, than discuss his masterpiece, if I haven't played it. Also, I think sometimes one learns more from analyzing why a lesser known course may or may not work than by analyzing the obvious courses. For instance, I recall reading on here that Tom Doak stated that Riverfront was built on all the same principles as Pacific Dunes, but obviously everyone would rather discuss PD. I'd love to discuss what he applied in each case, and compare the relative merits of each course.

Hope you understood that my comment about your credibility was a good-natured jab. If I were to guess, I'd think maybe Tom D wanted to take it offline to discuss things which couldn't really be said in a public forum, but maybe you're right.

Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

Tim W.,

Well with 75 posts albeit including some off-topic sidebars re a Doak course in Indiana I think we can now say that RTJ Jr. has been "mentioned" herein.  :)  Through this thread I'm reminded that I've played a couple of RTJ Jr. courses, Spanish Bay, Cabo Real in Los Cabos and Dove Valley Ranch outside Scottsdale. Two central themes I can attribute to these three courses is in each case the routing made pretty good use of the land (I'm including Spanish Bay in this as I understand the routing had to work around the clubhouse site) and each course had some really weak holes. In reverse order, Dove Valley Ranch has a more open nine and a nine that winds through some barrancas and trees. Both work pretty well with good greensites, green contouring and bunkering; the weakest holes seem to be those that get one to and from the clubhouse (10 and 18).  Cabo Real runs up and down a hillside and again has some strong greensites, I'm having trouble remembering many of the holes--one of my criteria for a quality course--which puts it down the list for me relative to Nicklaus's Cabo del Sol down the road.  Spanish Bay? Well, let's just say it's a special place for me because I played it on the morning of my wedding day with my best friend/best man, so what's not to like? [That was the last "free golf" I've played--you married guys know what I mean...  ;D ::) ]
