A GCA hypothetical...3 days in Paradise!
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:50:52 PM »
A few weeks back there was a thread about which courses one chooses to play on those "epic" trips.  There was a variety of responses about how one would go about setting up such a trip, and I was surprised at some of the responses in terms of seeing different courses vs staying put at 1 course for multiple plays. So I wanted to present a potential dream hypothetical scenario, (that may actually be reality for a few of you folks here), and see what your itinerary would look like?

So here's the setup.  Your prayers to the golf gods have finally been answered and you've been granted a 3 day long weekend in Monterey, CA in glorious June weather.  Here are the stipulations:

1)  You have 6 rounds of golf to be played on any course in the area. 1 round in the morning, 1 in the afternoon.
2)  You can play all of your rounds on 1 course or 6 different ones...there is no limit to the combinations/permuatations, other than its 6 rounds over 3 days max.
3)  The golf is all expenses paid so cost/price/green fees is not an issue.

My proposed itinerary/schedule would look like this:

Day 1)  Morning - CPC
           Afternoon - Spyglass

Day 2)  Morning - MPCC - Shore Course
           Afternoon - Pebble Beach

Day 3)  Morning - MPCC - Dunes Course
Afternoon - CPC for a 2nd go around.

That's 5 different courses with the one replay coming at CPC.

What would your schedule look like??

*** Edit:  I should clarify this was intended for this exact scenario as detailed.  I was mostly curious how one would spend thier 6 rounds at this place.  Whether it be all 6 at one very well known and epic course vs. the other excellent options in the area.

Day 1 - Sunningdale Old and New
Day 2 - Deal and Royal St.Georges
Day 3 - Rye and West Sussex

Error exclude me from the convo as I've not been to the area so have no idea

Day 1.  St. Louis CC , fly to Omaha and play Omaha CC then drive near Mullen.
Day 2.  Dismal River, Nicklaus and Doak
Day 3.  Sand Hills and Ballyneal, fly out of Denver back to St. Louis.

The fly into Omaha and then out of Denver is a truly amazing trip that I completed once already this year.  It can be done in three days, but really, why?

I read it that way as well.

If so,I'll play CPC 5 times and slum it at PB once.

Well...since we are living in fantasy land here:

Day 1:
AM - Cypress Point then private jet to L.A.
PM - LA CC North then private jet to Nebraska

Day 2:
AM - Sand Hills
PM - Dismal River then private jet on red-eye flight to Long Island

Day 3:
AM - NGLA
PM - Shinnecock

Alternatively

Day 1: NGLA
Day 2: Shinnecock and Maidstone
Day 3: Fisher's Island and Sebonack

If I'm limited to Monterrey then 4 rounds at CPC and one round each at MPCC Dunes and Shore.

Anywhere, I go with 6 rounds at Rock Creek.

In Monterrey, 4 rounds at CPC, and 2 at Pebble Peach. Dinner each night at the Whaling Station.

Steve, I like your trip, but you've got to play Cypress in the afternoon right? Same with NGLA to defend the slightly shorter course with more wind. Finally I think I'd go with Ballyneal over Dismal, and with a private jet it's still doable. Also reverse the days and that's my dream trip.

So:

Day 1
Shinny
NGLA
Day 2
Sand Hills
Ballyneal
Day 3
LACC North
Cypress Point

being cost aren't an issue...

On this day in 1974, an SR-71 Blackbird set a record by flying from New York to London in just under 1 hr., 55 mins. Just sayin...

If limited to Monterey, I'd skip Spyglass for a 3rd at CPC.

If geographically unfettered,

Day 1-
Fly to Denver
Drive to Ballyneal for 18+, with ogliing of new Hepner course-site, then on to Dismal River for Day 2 GCA foozlefest.
Day 2-
36 at Dismal River with ogling of new Doak course-site,
Drive back to Ballyneal.
Day 3-
18+ at Ballyneal, then drive back to Denver for flight home.

Oh, this is limited to hypothetical...never mind.

A fairly large group of us just played 18 at Cal Club on Monday afternoon followed by 18 at CPC in the morning of Tuesday and 18 at MPCC in the afternoon.  A few continued with 18 on the Dunes and then 18 at Pasatiempo.  It was a very good trip.

For me, it would be all about Long Island.

NGLA
Maidstone
Shinnecock
Friars Head
Atlantic
Sebonic
Fishers Island

Day 1-3: 36 holes @ ANGC, 9 Holes on the Par 3 course each night as the sun is setting.

Furthermore, I would explore every square inch of the property, clubhouse and library.  Stay at least one night in the Crow's Nest.  The rest of my nights in whatever lodging is available onsite.  Order my three favorite dishes (one for each night) and see what type of magic the Augusta chefs come up with.  I would also check out their wine cellar to pair my meals perfectly.  Of coarse, dessert each night would be Peach cobbler.

I'd spend a day each with Mr. Huntley, the big red head, and Huck. I'd let them pick the venues.

Apologies if that doesn't sound like a dream for them...

This is a cool thread...

Repeat play...Mullen, NE...Dismal, Sand Hill, rinse, repeat...hit Ballyneal coming and going.

New place...Royal Country Down, Royal Portrush...rinse, repeat...maybe a few others in the area...but I'd need help picking the ones.

Are you looking for a Monterey only answer?

Sorry,

I should have been more clear.  I was indeed looking for the exact scenario of Monterey, area only.

The question was intended to see how many folks would spend time at one very well known course, vs several other excellent options in the immediate area.

Well this is really wishful thinking, but I'll play Agusta National the first weekend in April.

Friday: ANGC/Par 3
Sat: ANGC/Par 3 (i would have the first tee both days on the weekend)
Sun: ANGC/Par 3

Long weekend at home;

Day 1 - Sunningdale Old and New
Day 2 - Deal and Royal St.Georges
Day 3 - Rye and West Sussex

Geez, I'll just join Chappers. Sounds like a fine time to me. I'll even spring for the beer and won't ask to wear his jacket.

[EDIT] Now I see it was Monterey specific. Oops!

I'll say this. The day I played at Cypress Point Club in the morning and MPCC Shore in the afternoon was as good a day as I'll ever hope to have. So I'll take three of those, thank you very much. Especially if the afternoons involve playing Wolf. Heck I'd even venture out to the Dunes course one day of the three.

I guess I'd just play Cypress the entire time.

Anywhere?

I would start in Edinburgh first by driving up the day before!

Day 1 - North Berwick (am) Muirfield (pm)

Down the A1

Day 2 - Ganton (am) Woodhall Spa (pm) - at least 2 hr drive between courses

Across to Norfolk

Day 3 - Hunstanton (am) Brancaster (pm) - I have a soft spot for these two!

Kalen,

I think you've hit the nail on the head.  The one other course, or back 9, that I would include in your itinerary is Pacific Grove.  You can include it after one of your afternoon rounds.  It's a great little walk during a setting sun.  Otherwise, your itinerary looks perfect to me.  Hope it comes true!
