Seven Days in Utopia
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:47:16 PM »
I just saw the trailer for the movie:  "Seven Days in Utopia".  It seems to be a golf version of the movie "Cars" which was a cartoon version of "Doc Hollywood".

Golf movies are usually pretty lousy (other than Caddyshack) but that was my observation.

Brock...

I enjoyed the book quite a bit.  I'll watch the movie for sure...I don't know if it will be any good...but what the heck.

three reasons I think and hope it will be good: the book was good; friends have gone down to the pro and really improved their games; and a few of my regular game invested in it. since I passed,it will be a huge success

No, I was wondering what was the location of "Utopia," where they filmed it, ie what course.

Last fall, my wife and I drove to Lost Maples State Natural Area for an overnight backpack trip.  As we drove over, we stopped in Utopia for lunch at the Lost Maple Cafe.  It's highly recommended for down home goodness by the way.

We stopped by Utopia Golf as we out the next day.  I was amazed that it had inspired the book I had just skimmed and that now a movie was being made about it.  Nothing particularly inspiring about the place...other than the chicken fried steak.

Sam Morrow -

Utopia looks to be 25-30 miles west of Bandera and 35-40 miles west of San Antonio.

I've read they filmed on the 9 hole Utopia Golf Course and the scenes from the on screen PGA tour events were filmed at Boot Ranch Golf Club.

I got to see a sneak preview of the movie a few weeks ago.  The golf course used is Hal Sutton's Boot Ranch in Fredericksburg.

The movie is good, not great.  It does capture the book by most parts and tries to get "Hollywooded" by having a small love interest (not in the book) and adversaries, TK OH and the other guy who likes the girl (also not in the book).  But they don't get too out of hand and go back to the premise of the book.

Casey,
I realize that most of the markeing information only has Hal Sutton as the designer of the golf course.    Actually, Hal was the developer and hired me to design the golf course.   Of course, Hal, as the developer, had significant input into the final layout, especially as it interacted with the housing component of the project.
Hopefully, I will be getting more recognition for my part in the development in the near future.
BR is one of my favorite projects ever and I love the hill country of Texas.
Hope some of you guys actually get to the area and get a chance to play it.
Can't wait to see the movie.   I read the book, tried the putter, and unfortunately, I am still searching.   :)

I've tried to tell 'em Jim, I've tried. Your design prowess seems no match for the caddying skills I saw on display yesterday on The Golf Channel however (Jack vs. Trevino back in '95).

My apologies!  We had our section event there a few years ago and I really enjoyed the course.  18 is a brutal finishing hole!  I found myself watching the movie and trying to figure out which holes were used.  Don't want to spoil it for the people who haven't seen the movie!

I expected junk when I clicked on the trailer, but I thought it looked really good. I'll certainly go see it. Plus the good looking redhead from True Blood is in it.
