Sedgefield CC In person vs TV views
« on: August 19, 2011, 02:33:01 PM »
I have been watching the Wyndham on TV.  The TV does not do justice to the elevation changes, the true sense of the tee shots, or the contours of the greens.  From TV it is not a course I'd really like to play or even find interesting.  In person, I love the course.  It just reinforces that making an "informed" opinion about a course from TV coverage is pretty difficult.  Sedgefield is really pretty good but comes off pretty dull on TV.

Tommy,
I really liked what I saw on TV.  Looks like there's still a lot of Ross there.

And, yes, TV flattens everything.  In the golf world, we see it at the Masters every year - hilly course that looks pretty flat on TV (especially a SDTV)

Kris Spence did an excellent job restoring an old worn out course and reinvigorating it.  I really is good and I just don't understand how these guys can go so low.  I guess they really are good.

I got to play Sedgefield with a friend in May and can see how how the pros can and will always go deep under par there as long as a) the greens remain bent grass and b) the tournament is contested in August.  The greens will always be softer due to heat-stress concerns and will never be particularly fast for the same reason.  There's nothing wrong with that, as I see it, but combined with the fact that the course is not bruisingly long and the par 5s are all extremely easy (everyone should birdie both of them every day, so that's two under par already), I can definitely see why Sedgefield plays easier than most courses on Tour.

That said, it's a wonderful course that I would be happy playing every day.  Great set of par 3s, especially.

+1 on the flattening.  #11 and 12 are two of my favorite green sites anywhere and on TV all the perspective is lost on #12.

Sadly though it is a par-68 for these guys as a practical matter - #5 was playing to a 4.35 average when I checked earlier in the day, and on #15 the guys were laying back to the wide part of the fairway about 250 out and still reaching easily with irons and hybrids.  Completely different hole when you have to worry about the fairway pinching in inside of 240 and the almost non-existent lay-up area.

It is a tremendously fun course to play, especially for those of us who are nowhere near that long off the tee.  This is the catch-22 of the PGA Tour these days, to protect par you have to get tricked up holes on the edge like 15 and 18 at AAC, and if you bring in fun/creativity, they go super low on you.

As someone who knows every inch of the place , it amazes me how much is lost through the television view.  I thought both networks did a great job in showing  the nuiances of Sedgefield with their hand help cameras around the greens and tee shots.  The 11th green complex is one that looks so benign from overhead yet the fill pad is at least 7 feet tall along the left  and back side falling steeply away.  From the aerial view it looked almost flat.  I wish the camera guys had moved down with the players when they missed left to show the difficultly recovering back up and over that slope.

Sedgefield has tons of Ross and a brilliant set of greens.  For a course with little in the way of greenside bunkers and no rough to speak of around the greens, I thought it presented itself very well.  I would love to see the tour play it in the spring with firm greens and a bit of a breeze.  It doesnt look like that will happen anytime soon as the August date has been extended through 2016 i think.

It is definitely worth a visit and play if you are passing through the Greensboro area.

Wyndham was a lot of fun. The crowds were great this weekend - a sellout.  I heard numerous people comment Tommy about the elevation xhanges after they had walked the course  Also a lot of media discussion about the possibility of the club going to a new ultradwarf bermuda grass on greens for more firm and fast conditions.

Hi Greg, you know as well as I do that the odds of them changing the greens to any kind of Bermuda are pretty remote.  I can't imagine John McConnell (the new owner) replacing these three year old greens.  He just put new greens in The Reserve at Pawley's Island, and Treyburn.  I am hoping that Musgrove Mill is next in line for new greens.

the course from TV reminds me a lot of Pine Needles. Looks like some ridges crossing fairways and some down and up.Maybe even some similar real estate.
