I'm not really in the market for a trip to Pinehurst in August. Especially this August! Holy swamp-ass, Batman. That said, either of the packages mentioned sound wonderful. I really enjoyed the pork chop at...errr, I mean staying at the Pinecrest Inn on my last trip to the area. And twice around the Dormie Club would be a treat.

But the combo package of Dormie Club and Tobacco Road plus Mid-Pines really covers a lot of ground. Architecturally, historically, golfingly and every other way. What fun that would be!

Agreed.  I am going to try and do some sort of trip to Pinehurst before Dormie Club goes completely private, and I expect what I will end up trying to do is combining something near the second package with a one-night stay at Pinehurst Resort to play #2 (and another Pinehurst course).  Because of the heat and the desire to walk, I'll probably aim for the *other* low season (winter).

I've arranged trips there twice in the lowest of low season, around Superbowl time. One time an ice storm arrived a day before I was to leave home. Trip cancelled. A year later we played 36 at Pine Needles and 18 at Mid-Pines in absolutely gorgeous shirt-sleeve weather (OK, the early mornings were a bit nippy). The kind of weather northerners would call "Autumn".

So I like your chances!

That is like asking, "How long is a piece of string?" It all depends.

Word has it that Dormie Club will not be offering public play past the end of this year. But, I would guess it all depends on how long is their piece of string come 2012.

I have practically zero chance of making it to NC before 2012, so my hope is that the articles are correct.

I visited last Saturday and was told "thru 2012".  It was as hot and humid as you would expect for August.  I was told our foursome and a twosome going out a few hours later constituted the rounds for the day.

I played in mid-July and the greens were shaggy. The course is good enough that I am happy to look past that...and it's certainly understandable given the weather and a reduced maintenance budget, but still curious.

Ryan - the small practice green by the first tee was in good shape and fast, much faster than all those on the course, so a little disappointing but understandable (I think?) for August.  The first few greens were in decent shape, but as we got into the round I noticed more bare batches - but I can't think of one time where the "bareness" was in anyone's line.  On several putts the ball noticeably hopped a few times.  All-in I think they were probably fine for the time of year, and price.  But frankly I would have been pissed if I had paid a ton more. 

By way of comparison I played #2 five weeks ago and while the greens were slow, they rolled true.   

Now don't ask me about the collars: nearly all were recently sodded and I'm not sure they won't have to be resodded again this Fall.  And they still have a way to go to acheive "fast and firm" if that's what they're going for.

Based on the recommendations here I had a few friends play the Dormie Club when they were recently in Pinehurst for a wedding.  Everyone raved about the course.  I really have to get myself down there now.
