I came across this article today, from 1927, where the author is suggesting that some holes should be designed to require a lofted backspin shot.

Interesting article. Thanks for the link. What is know about Mr. Metcalf, the author?

Pat Mucci would certainly agree with his comments regarding how the turf fronting greens should be maintained to enable runner up shots to reach the green.

Mr. Metcalf was a distinguished zoologist. At the time he wrote this article he was living in New Jersey, but I don't know where he was golfing as a regular.

What's interesting is the possibility for all the b****ing around here, it seems quite possible that modern irrigation systems actually make the run up game more feasible than in the old days.

If so, there would have to be about 4 Million posts on this site revised, no?

Jeff, Interesting take.

I found the article to be all about variety. But in the early going, the line about 'Natural holes allowing too much latitude in choice of club' was a red flag. But then as I read it, I get changing my mind on who i thought wrote it. I inferred at different points in the piece everyone from Josh Crane, Tillie, to Behr was writing it. Far and Sure.
