Signature Club Cocktails
« on: August 05, 2011, 01:53:01 PM »
I'm not sure if it was Shivas' mention of a "De&Re" or that it's a Friday afternoon in the Summer that got me thinking about club cocktails. It seems that there are quite a few "signature" cocktails that are made up and then ordered in mass by the membership. The "Fernando" at The Country Club of Brookline being a favorite, personally and otherwise.

Recently, I've been introduced to a Minneapolis-St. Paul tradition called a "Bootlegger," which may or may not of contributed to my inability to read Interlachen's greens.  ;D Essentially it's lemonade blended with mint leaves, with sprite and vodka. They call it a bootlegger because you can't taste or smell the alcohol over the lemonade and mint and it was made popular during the prohibition. If you're interested, here is an article I found on the drink and it's origins:

Anyway, what's your favorite "signature" club cocktail?

The Velvet Hammer at Augusta Country Club is pretty tasty this time of year.  This one is made with vanilla bean ice cream.  It is more hammer than velvet.

The bootlegger sounds a lot like a Southside...the preppy choice at Piping Rock, The Creek, etc...

Sounds nice. I've gotta get back down there pronto!

Sounds like one heavy post-round drink!

I've always thought that some club should specialise in a Longhurst. Henry Longhurst's favourite Sunday morning drink was a pink gin topped up with champagne.

Thanks, Pat!  I just went out and bought some mint.  Sounds like the perfect drink for this afternoon.

What is NGLA's drink?  I recall reading about it, but I have no idea where.

Steve,  Thanks.  In reading Bill Hyde's comment above, I suppose the drinks follow the architecture.

Pat, I came across the Bootleg a number of times during my research for the Minnesota golf book -- though I was too responsible to sample one. Woodhill C.C. claims Bob Hope pleaded with their bartender for the recipe, but Somerset C.C. was adamant that the drink started at their club, with mint that grew just outside the clubhouse bar. I regret to say it's a mystery I was unable to definitively solve. I think I'll do more research.

Southsides on LI, Rum Floats at Fairfield, Fernandos at TCC, Ship Wreck at Boston Golf, Ramborita at Champions, Mai Tais at Kapalua, Jager at Rivermont, Transfusions just about anywhere.  All good thoughts on a Friday afternoon.

Funny, the Southsider is the signature drink at the Vally Club on the West Coast as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't CB Macdonald bring the Southsider to NGLA from Chicago? Hence the "Southsider" name?

Chicago Golf Club is west side , right?!

Somebody from either LI or Chicago must have taken the recipe out to Santa Barbara!

Long Island Tea at National Golf Links. We all have one after golf and I could barely walk straight.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cypress Point has the 'Sam's Special' with a base of rum but the rest is secret.

I would think many clubs have a drinker or two in their histories which had a unique drink of choice. If the mens bar tender has enough years at the tap so to speak a club drink is born.

The Golf Club - "Moscow Mule"
The Country Club - "Fernando" and the latest addition, "Tina Ria"
Crystal Downs - "Sleepy Bear"
Merion - "Mug" and "Pine Valley"
Atlantic City - "Bloody Mary"
Whisper Rock - "Chocolate Shake"

Patrick -  the Southerly Busters at Kingston Heath were fantastic! The ceremonial clinking of the tankards was a hoot. I loved the way they seemed to refill themselves when I wasn't looking!!!

Come to Rolling Green and ask for a Malone-------water on ice.

Based upon our summer thus far, that is clearly the drink of choice.
