Stephen, Tim:

I've been very fortunate over the years having played them all previously.

However, never so many greats one right after another.

It was like watching the Miss America contest!

With some comments -

Apawamis - Rained Out Today
Old Oaks - Westchester Caddy Scholarship tournament - 5 holes then rained out yesterday

Hudson National  - home course, I know Tom Doak isn't impressed :)
Ballyneal - other very far from home home course - Tom probably is a bit more impressed
Rockaway Hunt Club - Still recovering from hurricane Sandy
East Hampton Golf Club - a tale of 2 courses 1-7 links; 8-18 into the woods
Bayonne - lost an Outpost Club match 8&6
Oak Hill East - loved it, especially the front 9
Essex County Country Club - very pleasant surprise, under the radar
Yale - discussed in prior thread
Quaker Ridge - I think they could host an open if they wanted to and had the facilities, but still fun and fair
Willow Ridge CC Westchester, NY

But, Jason, it isn't a contest.

Here is the opening post...

...someone made the comment that most of the folks on here generally play average courses.

Might as well take a survey.  What are the last ten courses you played?

This thread is simply designed to give the board a feel for the courses that the participants on this thread are playing.  In essence, this provides context for the discussions on the board.

For instance, if you want to have a great discussion about the playability of sub-par daily fee courses...Gene Greco is not the guy to talk with on this topic.   ;)

This is not my own "Last 10" but ,rather, that of a travelling mate. I played several of these with him but his Last 10 is pretty amazing:

Old Sandwich
Country Club
Fisher's Island
Maidstone
NGLA
Friar's Head
Rolling Green
Bethpage Black
Baltusrol
Garden City

FWIW....the five before that (on the same road trip) included Somerset Hills, Piping Rock, Quaker Ridge, Cabo del Sol Ocean & Diamante

Like Greg, this is not my list but that of two friends of mine from across the pond.  Their last 10 in the US would include:
Cypress Point
San Francisco
Oakmont
Merion
Gulph Mills
Pine Valley
Shinnecock
NGLA
Maidstone
The Creek

4. Hankley Common
5. Royal Cinque Ports
6. Doonbeg

Patrick,

When we last spoke you hadn't played the Island previously, what did you think?

Hi Bart,

I really liked the Island - instantly up there with my favourite courses in Ireland. We were very lucky with both days - lovely sunny weather and a nice 15 mph breeze. I think the highs at The Island are quite high :

1. Challenge and variety of teeshots
2. Pure links land (16 is awesome)
3. Unique holes in the world of golf (e.g. 5, 16)

I would probably have it just behind Lahinch and RCD in terms of quality but would without hesitation recommend it to anyone making a trip to Ireland. Much more enjoyable that The European Club for example.

Regards,

Patrick

Mac:

    Au contraire.

I would trade all of those experiences to go back in time and play golf with my son when he was a six year old. We used play at a course called Sandy Pond in Riverhead, NY which had an honor box in which you placed your green fee.

Course is very playable for beginning golfers and, of course, nondescript architecturally.

Again, would trade the time travel for play on any of the mightiest courses I have played recently.

Ideally, would be nice to see him play again at NGLA when he was 18 months!

What a great answer! Seriously, I think this may be one of my favorite posts I have read here. I have a 4 year old and an 18 month old. I constantly wish I could just pause time.
