I would love to hear your thoughts on  Thorny Lea  and Maidstone

Mark-Thorny Lea was a pleasure to play and in great condition. It seemed longer than the card yardage of 6460 with the prevailing wind hurting on a number of the tougher holes. The first two holes have no hazards which lend a false sense of security because there are plenty to follow in varying locations. The property has some nice natural features as well as a very good set of greens with lots of slope and some subtle internal contours. I would call them smallish as a collection but they vary in size with plenty of options to get in on the ground on many of the holes. A standout for me was the one shot 17th playing 190 yards to a front to back sloping green with plenty of cool pin positions.       

The club is abuzz right now as their member Matt Parziale who is a 30 year old Brockton fireman just won the U.S. Mid-Am. It’s a great old club that fly’s under the radar as Metro Boston is loaded with options. I can’t wait to go back.

I would love to hear more of your thoughts on Gavea.  When I was in Rio last year, I played there and the Olympic course.  I enjoyed the Olympic course and posted a tour here, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the course.  Having been to the Australian Sandbelt since then, I think I'm in a better position to appreciate what Gil accomplished now.


That being said, Gavea was completely different and a lot of fun to play.  A completely different experience from the Olympic course and one I'm glad I sought out.  Looking forward to hearing your perspective.

Gamble Sands is excellent.  The setting is beautiful, and the course is enjoyable for a wide range of skill levels. 


Instead of traditional tee boxes, the markers are set on broad expanses of fairway-like turf.  The length of the course and playing angles can change significantly based on markers selected, and the course can be set up to play differently from day-to-day.  On tee shots, for example, bunkers that can be readily carried one day may be out of reach the next because the tee markers have been shifted dramatically.  In a 15mph breeze, which must be common given the course's setting on a high plateau above the river, GS could be set up to be challenging for even very skilled players. 


The weakest element is the green complexes, only a few of which contain significantly undulation.  GS does not present that many interesting short game challenges.

Mike-The Rhode Island Ross courses are a treat. Although Wanamoisett gets the most praise Misquamicut is the most fun to play. The outward nine has a completely different feel with some wild landforms and great mix of par fours. Add in a very cool "Volcano" hole on # 8 and I was hooked. Holes 11 through 17 play out along Narragansett Bay with an elevated tee shot over Route 1A on 11 that is a blast to hit. The land is much more tame on the inward holes but the experience no less exhilarating. When you cross back over Route 1A for the second time you play the home hole in the direction of the clubhouse where the finish is delivered in the form of a stout par three of 215 yards that plays considerably longer because it plays straight uphill.[size=78%] Absolutely one of my favorite Ross courses or of any architect for that matter. Hope you ate some Italian when you were in Providence man![/size]

What did you think of the River Course, Brian?

I really enjoyed it, and would be very happy to play it frequently.  It's among the 3 or 4 best Fazio courses I have played (and I am not a Fazio hater at all).  It's a great walk, had plenty of variety, and offered opportunities to score without being a pushover.  I'd put the course in a similar class to Secession and Chechessee Creek, two other low-country gems I'd love to visit often.
