Which is?

18 at Paxon?  I wouldn't even pick it as one of the best on the course.  1 is a great one, a true Cape hole with a diagonal tee shot and a green jutting out into space.  5 is also tremendous, as are 8 and 9 (Kyle, you gotta put this one up there).  Then 10-13 are an absolute dynamite start to the back nine, and 15 is a very dramatic par three.  A favorite?  Hmm, 1, 9, 13 and 15 are my final four, but I'd go with 13 for the win (though 1 usually works its way into an eclectic 18--seriously, how many better starting holes can you think of?)

D Malley, I'd love to hear your pick as a fave at Paxon.  Does any 5,700 yarder have more standout holes than PH? I doubt it.

As for faves at Rolling Green, there are several: 1 is a great opener with a steep green, and 2 is a grand long par four.  Call 7 a par five or a par four, but it is a tremendous hole with a super approach shot.  8, of course, is a beast, with a great decision to be faced off the tee and a killer greensite.  9?  Not my favorite, though I appreciate it as a battle of man vs. nature.  10?  That's a much better maximum-length hole for the par.  11 is very cool, 13, 14, and 16 are rugged golf at its best.  I'd pick 8 out of all of them, though I could say a bunch of different choices here.

Mayday/Moses: why is 15 your favorite at RG?  You might have explained it to me while I was there, but I'd like to hear your reasoning again.

#12 is my favorite these days
you have to choose the right club off the tee to avoid the ravine, and then probably one of the most chalenging 2nd shots on the course.
a lofted iron from a down/side hill lie to a green that sits above you. and when the pin is back left you can use a the back stop to draw the ball back towards the hole.

12 is a phenomenal par four.  Kyle pointed out that the best angle into the left-to-right sloping green is as close to the right-hand ravine as possible.  This means the player should actually try to drive into the right rough if possible--that's a little strange, of course, but the tradeoff and strategy is still there.  Also, the greensite on the far side of the chasm is excellent and very appropriate for a shorter par four.

9 is my favorite at PH. It has a wonderful diagonal fairway, like a cape but without water. The approach is to a narrow and nicely contoured green that falls off quite dramatically to the left. 6 could be fun if it were driveable; remove the stupid bunker in front! I would love to see trees removed on the right to have a bilevel fairway option there ( along with changing 7's awkward dogleg by shortening the hole). I would love to see research done to put #2 green down the hill by #3 green. #5 is improved by the new centerline bunker. For #10 I would remove the trees along the creek to allow a heroic tee shot. How can you not love #11; such a chance for the average golfer to get home in two.
You know what? PH is a very good course!

  John,

15 is my favorite at RG because it requires a thoughtful drive and has a challenging approach to a two tiered green that is set up high and well bunkered. It also is beautiful, particularly in those late day rounds when the sun is setting behind the green.

9th in the series is the par 3 12th at Llanerch.  This article is good since a young Buddy Marucci is part of it.

I'm not sure that's the best par 3 at Llanerch. I think possibly #17 is the best. My favorite hole there is #11. I love the way the green slopes away from the front to the back.

10th in the series is the 5th at Penn Oaks.  I used to belong to PO many years ago, but have no photos.  But I don't think it is even close to being the toughest hole on the course, at least when I was playing there regularly!

Nancy is still around, a friend and a Friend. I'll have to forward this to her.

#16 proves why you need to widen the corridor of play by cutting down trees as you lengthen the hole. We have done a great job of this. When I joined you needed to fade the tee shot to the back right flag. I'm not a fan of dogleg par threes.

This hole shows Flynn's genius with angles. Because it is a short iron shot it is usually a half shot that makes the difference. So, a back right club selection hit to the left goes over the green. A front left shot selection that goes right ends up in the bunker.

As the article points out , a short hole like this emboldens the average golfer to think " certainly I can control an 8 iron". When what you really should do is just hit it in the middle of the green.

There is another frame of mind that sets in on this tee usually. " Ok, now we finish with three easy holes after all those tough ones, piece of cake!". This is a very dangerous place to be.

12th in the series is Aronimink's 10th hole.  I believe this hole has been changed quite a bit since this article.

To judge #8 at AGC how about comparing it to other prominent long downhill par threes like #17 at Merion and HVCC or GMGC's. Which do you prefer ?   Only AGC and HVCC have the long option in play. That is an advantage for them. GMGC may have the best runup option. HVCC has that Flynn angle. AGC's internal contours are the best. I might add #10 at Glen Mills to the mix with its trapozoidal green and the ridge running from front to back.

For me, it is all about fun so I give the nod to AGC with Glen Mills in second.

14th in the series is from a course that really goes unnoticed in the Philly area, and it is maybe 3 miles down the road from Villanova, Radnor Valley CC.  The article has it as the 9th hole in 1973, but it is now the 18th hole.

Again , some nice selections. #4 at Springhaven is hands down the best hole there and is among the most challenging approaches in the area. #4 at Overbrook is a good hole on that course. They should cut down the trees on the left so you could bring the tee shot from the left on to that left to right sloping fairway.

BTW as my group approached #16 RG today I brought up this 70's listing. I asked them to guess the two holes from RG. One said #12 and #9; one said #14 and #8; the other said #15 and #1. I'll take that as a statement about RG!
