You only get to take 10 books
« on: July 26, 2011, 03:14:35 PM »
Lets assume you have the greatest personal collection of golf books known to man (available to man) and your home is on fire. Assuming all important things (family, photo, clubs) are safe. What 10 books do you grab from your library to save? 8 of them have to be architecture related.

From my measly assortment:
1.   The Confidential Guide
2.   Scotland’s Gift
3.   Wind’s History of American Golf
4.   Darwin’s The Golf Courses of the British Isles
5.   Hunter’s The Links
6.   Doak’s Anatomy of a Golf Course
7.   Planet Golf
8.   Where Golf is Great (Finegan)
9.   one of Shackleford’s:  either Alister Mackenzie’s Cypress Point Club or The Golden age of Golf Design
10.   Wexler’s The Golfer’s Library—so that I can start over again.
11.   Just ‘cause I never follow orders, George’s The Evangelist of Golf

I’m probably missing a few.  In fact, if they all burned, I could probably collect 10 loaned out to friends and be OK.  Once read, my books circulate in the futile attempt to convince my golfing mates there is more to the game than a friendly wager, a scorecard covered in presses and other scribbles, and cold beer.  A losing fight against a compellingly wicked mistress.

I didn’t read the question very carefully until after I posted.  I’d take the 10 that made the collection the greatest known to man and, no doubt, cost a fortune to acquire because they are irreplaceable.  Safely secured, I’d scan them and put them online.

Golf Books:

Golf Course Architecture in America
Golf Architecture
The Links
Some Essays on Golf Architecture
Eighteen Stakes on a Sunday Afternoon
The Future of Golf in America
The Confidential Guide
The Architectural Side of Golf

The other two are a much tougher choice;
Structures by Gordon, Ways of Seeing by Berger, perhaps....

As much as I love golf and GCA, if my library was on fire, I'd grab the confidential guide and Anatomy of a Golf Course.  Everything else I cold grab at Barnes and Noble.

That being said, if I ever get exiled to a desert island with no Internet, The Lord of the Rings and The name of the Rose are my first two picks.  For golf books, I love Slim and None and Spirit of St. Andrews.  If I'm stranded on a desert island, the CG won't do me much good:)

Mike, you'd make a lousy criminal - the idea is to hide them all and THEN collect on the insurance. Of course, many people have told me I'd make a lousy criminal, and I consider that a compliment...

I don't know if any of my golf books would make the cut (besides Rick's book, friends first!), but among my gca books, I'd give some consideration to:

Daley's Golf Architecture volumes
Daley's My Favourite Holes By Design
Shack's Golden Age of Golf
Shack's Cypress Point book
Shack and Miller's The Art of Golf Design
Bahto's The Evangelist of Golf
Everything Darwin I own (only 2, I think)

I already gave away 3 copies of The Confidential Guide, didn't realize they'd become collectors items - that's an apt metaphor for my life, really.

I dont think the value that I would be reimbursed would fully compensate for the notes, qualities and charm each of the books I own have. I would say kind of a quirky thing like mentioned on the site here. Just not worth it to let em burn...give me another 10 years with the books and I may take your advice though.

Emile,
Not nearly as many "architectooralooral" as you demanded but I find the "architectooralooral" tomes a wee bit dry after a while! I might be shunned, nay banished, after such an admission on this site! Notwithstanding here is my selection which I simply cannot whittle down below eleven!

World Atlas of Golf
Scotlands Gift: Golf - C. B. Macdonald
The Links - R. S. Hunter
The Mystery of Golf - A. Haultain
Golf in The Kingdom - M. Murphy
The Essential Henry Longhurst - H. Longhurst
Following Through - H. W. Wind
The Happy Golfer - B. Darwin
Sophie's World - J. Gaarder
Cold Mountain - C. Frazier
Last Night in Twisted River - J. Irving
