I'll bite, Mr. Lyon

Prohibitively authoritative list, as always. I must have played, so if there's a glaring omission in your opinion, I've probably not played the course or I feel emotionally attached to my selection.

1) Inniscrone, Mountain Lake, West Shore Country Club near Harrisburg, PA
2) Five Ponds Golf Club in Warminster, PA (My first GIR and a decent hole to boot), Lancaster Country Club
3) Huntingdon Valley
4) Lederach, Tot Hill Farm, Rolling Green, Bethpage Black
5) Palmetto Golf Club, Merion West, Tobacco Road
6) Inniscrone
7) Palmetto Golf Club
8) Huntingdon Valley, Lancaster, Rolling Green (All Flynn, hmmm)
9) Rolling Green
10) Cobb's Creek
11) Jeffersonville, Macullough's Emerald Links, Inniscrone
12) Lederach, Huntingdon Valley, Mountain Lake
13)
14)
15) Cobb's Creek
16) Whitemarsh Valley
17)
18) Huntingdon Valley, Glen Ridge

I'll have to think about the omissions for awhile. Tom Doak is correct, this is a difficult list to actually consider good choices. I tried to avoid holes where a cross slope is more influential on the hole strategy than the uphill (i.e. the 15th at Huntingdon Valley). This choice lead to an influx or holes where the upslope is generally traversed in one shot (like the 11th at Jeffersonville and Macullough's or one-shotters like the 3rd at Huntingdon Valley, the 8th at Lancaster or the 11th at Inniscrone) or where the uphill terrain simply dominates the hole (18th at Huntingdon Valley or 6th at Inniscrone).

Only two holes longer 500 yards is on the list at present (4th at Bethpage Black, and the long 9th at Rolling Green). Do holes generally reached in three shots make for good uphill candidates?

#13 at No 2 Pinehurst would be on my list

Also in my neck of the woods #2 at Fenway is damn good golf hole, and not to be a homer, but #12 at Quaker Ridge which plays way up hill would be on my list as well.

Here are some of my favorites:

#11 (par 4) at Rustic Canyon
#12 (par 3) at Bandon Trails
#7 (par 4) at Old Macdonald
#15 (par 5) at Old Macdonald

The problem with most uphill holes is that they are straight and have boring greens.

Here is one that I am considering as the worst uphill holes: #14 at Pebble Beach.

Scott I think it's funny that you list a problem with most uphill holes as the fact that they are straight and have boring greens then list your worst uphill hole as one that is neither straight or containing a boring green.

Mike,

#16 at Saguaro actually reminds me a lot of your #7 at Wolf.  Short, demure, not in your face--then you look back after playing it and wonder why it beat you up.

Kyle,

Lots of decent choices for uphill/downhill holes at Palmetto, surprised you went with #5 (which is one of those downhill then uphill holes) and #7, which only appears uphill IMO.  #6 is sandwiched in there as the best of the three IMHO.

Do we get to count holes like #13 at No 2, ie relatively flat most of the way with a green up on a hill, as uphill?

I dont know, but I don't see why not! The elevation from tee-green is fairly significant and the fairway does climb a bit... #5 on No 2 should also be on the list, don't know why it didn't pop into my head instantly as well.

I would probably put the Alps hole at Yale on my list as well upon further consideration.

Guys who have played Dismal: no love for 5 as a great uphill hole?  I love the skyline green, and the centerline bunker has great effect interacting with the uphill shot and the skyline green.  I loved 2 and 3 as well.

K-Harris, do you really think 11 at Inniscrone is a great uphill hole?  I thought it was the weakest of the par threes.  I do love 1 and 6.  In fact, I might take 1 over the opener at Jeffville (of course, I forgot about 11 there--might be the best on the property).  Ballyneal is another great uphill opener, but, as you pointed out, there are very few uphill openers that are also good holes.

Friars Head #14 (top 2 of holes I've ever played)
Crystal Downs #8 (best par 5 other than FH #14 I've seen)
Pine Valley #2 (wide fairway, great green--hope they don't mess with it too much)
Riviera #9 (underrated due to the hole that follows)
Palmetto #15 (one of the most strategic holes on the golf course, I think)
Stone Eagle #2 (best hole on hat golf course IMO, really cool options for recovery, cool green hump in front right)
Oakmont #3 (green green site)

Lots more to choose from.  It wasn't until I really analyzed my preferences that I thought about how much more I enjoy uphill holes vs. downhill holes.  It struck me as odd.

In my town, Chitown:

5 at Beverly a demanding and scenic 410 yard par 4 with a menacing fairway bunker and a great plateau green.

17 at Flossmoor a monster 470 par 4 with a creek in play for a big hitter and a semi blind skyline green.

4 at Medinah #3 a prototypical muscular uphill parkland par 4.

Agree with these....but add in #16 at Mednah...which I thnk may be the hardest of the lot.

How about #5 at Pine Valley?

Patron - 3 isn't uphill, I think it fits under WAY uphill.  I like the hole too as you must think to play it well.  Hard to find a good WAY uphill Par 3.

This thread is fully as we do have an abundance of uphill stuff, huh?

Tamarack #6 Alps- 412 yd. uphill par 4.  Tee shot needs to be left center followed by blind shot to large subtle green.

Jud:  please call 1 800 BETTY FORD immediately. The only thing Tamarack deserves to be on a best-of list for is "best future cornfield".

Shiv,

When's the last time you played there?

Bethpage Black -- #15. 459 yard, par 4. Approach is two a two-tiered green that is significantly elevated above the level of the fairway, and is well-bunkered.
