The Jans needs $20,280

To pay the water bill.  Tough times even for the best courses in the country.

I was surprised, mostly because I thought they never watered the course.

Time for Shivas to walk 108 holes in reverse?

108? I'd do 155 to play the Reverse again.

Interesting: "The board has had “discussions of a very preliminary nature with the director of the golf program at Northwestern University." What would Northwestern or their golf team want with the Jans?

Maybe they need a new venue for after-class discussions of sex toys?

Slightly more seriously: At graduation this year, we heard talk of a major upgrade of the university's athletic facilities. NW doesn't have its own golf course, does it? Maybe the city hopes to persuade them that *any* course is a major upgrade from none.

NWU does not have its own facilities. The teams practice primarily at the Glen Club.

Dan,

Northwestern used to own and operate what is now Wilmette Golf Club. When it was owned by the university it hosted a Western Junior and either 1 or 2 Big Ten Championships. They sold it about 35 years ago.

NU and Luke Donald put a lot of money into renovating the back of the range at the Glen Club. So I can't see them buying or operating the course for the teams. Although the Jans did used to hold a mini tour event there once won by Tim Herron.

Shiv, according to Terry, he and NU have both wanted to park cars on the course, but the City would not let them (would have been a major cash cow for the course which is, as we can see from the article, really struggling). Apparently there were some issues with drunken idiots parking on the course which resulted in Evanston removing permission for the course to have cars parking there.

Although Northwestern's golf teams do have a dedicated practice area at the back of the Glen Club's range, their rota of courses for practice rounds is pretty awesome. Apparently they have access to a large number of North Shore venues on a regular basis.

Those NU guys are a lucky bunch. I believe their old head coach prior to Pat Goss was/is the Pro at Conway...hence why they play there quite a bit. When Luke was still in school they played and practiced at Glen View probably 3x a week due to John Cleary being an assistant coach of NU and a Pro at GVC.

The story goes that after graduating and turning pro, Luke asked about joining GVC as he likes the course, it doesn't get a lot of play, and he was living in Evanston at the time. The then President of the Club told him to "file an application" and to go through the process like everyone else...Luke then immediately joined North Shore CC.  ::)

Today, NU gets their pick of clubs on the North Shore. Generally speaking from the guys I know who have somewhat recently graduated they all hate the Glen Club, think Shoreacres is too easy, North Shore has a lousy range, Skokie has limited flight range balls that stink, etc... aka they are doing their best professional golfer impression!!!  ;D

Northwestern used to own and operate what is now Wilmette Golf Club. When it was owned by the university it hosted a Western Junior ...

Won in 1947 by Tom Veech, an excellent player who obviously did a wonderful job of passing his love of the game on to his kids (and, ultimately, his grandkids).  I play with his son occasionally (who loves workiing on his short game more than just about any weekend warrior I've ever seen!  ;D) , but had no idea his dad won the Western Junior until just now.

Tom Veech also made a couple of big runs in the Western Open in the 1960s. Finished in a tie for fifth in 1967 at Beverly, five behind winner Jack Nicklaus. He was tied with Jack, a stroke behind leader Doug Sanders, entering the final round. He also tied for sixth in 1964 at Tam O'Shanter, ending up 10 behind winner Chi Chi Rodriguez.
