Good Courses near Penn State

Heading out to Penn State in a few weeks. ANyone know any good courses out there?  Might only get a round in during trip.

You might check out a courses by the name of Penn State University golf courses.  Kyle Harris did an 'in my opinion' piece on them on this website and i think he did the wikipedia pages for them too.  I haven't played them, but I did play Toftrees down the road, which was pleasant but nothing special IMO.

Penn State has two courses:  The White course has 9 or so of its orginal Willie Park holes still there.

Freestone GC, Port Matilda, PA

Its a new course that openend their back ninie in 2008 I believe.  The course is built on the side of mountain and of course is quite hilly.  Fun course to play.

Philipsburg Elks Lodge & CC Philipsburg, PA is a 9 hole Alex Findlay course that has 8 of his orginal greens and plays up, down and around the large hill that the clubhouse is on.

For sure check out Kyle's GCA piece on the evolution of the Penn State golf courses. The old White course still has a fair amount of Willie Park Jr. in it. worth playing.

Toftrees or either of the Penn State courses are a good bet.

My piece was updated back in January and is fairly indicative of my research to date. The Willie Park greens on the White Course are noteworthy and superintendent Rick Pagett is really embracing this heritage. Original fairway corridors are being preserved along with green space.

Toftrees is by far the best Ault/Clark Associates golf course I've played and I enjoy playing it.
