The improved 13th at Grandfather!
« on: June 12, 2011, 04:39:01 PM »
Grandfather, as many of you know, is very dear to my heart.  The unnatural bunker placed before the lovely natural mountain creek at the end of the fairway on the 13th hole has always pained me.  Several of you have commented on that bunker on varous threads over the years (never in a positive light).  Well, the bunker is no longer!  Enjoy the before and after:

Before (obviously, in Fall):

After (today, overcast):

And slightly cioser:

At least for me, a tremendous improvement.  Several very knowledgeable people refered to the now defunct bunker as Grandfather's worst feature.  A new shaved chipping area has also been added left of the green.  Here's to an even better Grandfather going forward.

Hi Bart,

I agree - much better with that bunker gone.  I haven't played the course before but what are your thoughts regarding that tree?  Looks to me like it just tells you where not to hit it off the tee when the bunkers short right of the green should be penalty enough for anyone on the right half?

Was placing that bunker one of Shivas' ideas? :)

Good on ya Bart. Good luck with the remainder.

Bart, you know my feelings about that bunker.  It de-emphasized one of the most striking natural hazards on the course.  This is a huge improvement, both aesthetically and strategically.  Congratulations!

As an aside, I have always liked cross hazards (particularly creeks) that angle away from the preferred line of approach.  If you want the best angle to the green but don't want to have a longer shot, you have to flirt with the hazard.  The restored 6th hole at Charlotte CC has a similar design concept that works extremely well.

Very nice - good on ya, Bart + Grandfather for a positive change. A beautiful hole with a perplexing feature is now just beautiful.

Looks much improved. But the big question is have you heard anyone complaining about missing it?
