3rd Degree Byrne: a routing contest
« on: May 02, 2011, 12:18:44 PM »
Yesterday Cirba and I experienced John F. Byrne Golf Course, one of Philly's munis.  It originally was a private club beginning around 1930, an Alex Findlay design.  Years ago the city of Philly bought it and many changes have occurred to the original layout (loss of land and re-routing and I believe adding of some holes to replace some lost).

The routing of the course is simply, well, interesting to say the very least.  While we were perplexed late in the round, and thankful signs were present to get us to the next tee, we thought it might be fun to have a little contest at GolfClubAtlas.

On the Google aerial below is a stick diagram showing all the holes.  I've labelled the first hole '1', and the clubhouse is 'CH'.  The rest of the holes are labelled letters A thru Q.  Can you correctly guess the current routing?  One other hint:  the 18th green does finish in the vicinity of the clubhouse.

First place prize for most accurate routing:  a round at John F. Byrne
2nd place prize:  two rounds at Byrne    ;)

Well, that took a couple minutes (don't want to ruin it for the Arm Chairers).  My guess (as screwed-up as it is) is that this is what's left after some of the original course was sold off for houses.  The apparant abandoned hole north of N is exhibit "A"
Coasting is a downhill process

A 1939 aerial suggests that two greens to the right of the clubhouse above were lost.  That area is now baseball, basketball, and tennis courts.

Cool.

Did I get them all right or are we going to have a big result posting at the end so as not to spoil anything?  ;D

You are close.  You have a couple of long sequences of holes correct.   ;D

Joe,

Only a mind as twisted as Kalen's could come that close on the first attempt!  ;)  ;D

Ha ha... true indeed.

No doubt that routing has a couple of odd transitions, but I came up with it by working backwards...figuring out which hole was the most likely "18" and going from there.  I guess if I was close I must have picked the wrong one as the finisher.   :'(

Ding, ding, ding!  We have a winner.  Nice job Matt.

Kalen and Adrian, you can pick up your lovely parting gifts at the door.   ;)

It is exercises like this that remind me of one of my favorite Clint Eastwood lines: "A man's gotta know his limitations."

I look at something like this, or Charlie's topographic lessons which left me totally baffled, and realize that while I think I am an excellent judge of a golf hole/golf course once it is on the ground, I have ZERO ability to conceptualize a piece of property from afar. And this gives me great appreciation for Kalen being able to guess an old routing, or others being able to route from a topo map.

If that Google aerial suggested that Byrne could use meeting up with a Pohlan or Stihl, here is a ground level tee box photo of the dogleg left par 4:
