It's been almost a week, has anyone played it yet?

I played it opening day. Have some work to knock out this week, but I shot an hour's worth of video that I'm hoping to start editing this weekend.

The "new" No. 2 is just brilliant.

I have walked every hole and echo Tom's sentiments.

Also, and this is not always the case, the Resort has done a FANTASTIC job in spelling out what was done. On the place mats in the Donald Ross Grill, they have written out a short synopsis as follows: 35 acres of grass removed - Over 100,000 wire grass plants added - Wider, firmer fairways - Natural sandy roughs restored - Eliminated 500 sprinkler heads - Natural bunker edges restored.

All true and what's not to like?!

Cheers,

Brad Klein

Am  playing No. 2 Sunday (tomorrow) afternoon for a Golfweek review to follow very soon. Have been there twice since they started and have been impressed, surprised and excited about the work thus far.

Played it this past weekend. It was outstanding. The detail work off the fairways was amazing, all the little bits and pieces of earth movement. Seems you rarely get a perfectly level or clean lie; there's almost always a little something to contend with. The course doesn't look radical at all. In fact, it really looks like everything belongs exactly as it now is, and anything different, such as the bermuda rough, is artificial.

I will be playing it April 1. I'm not a photogrpaher/videographer, especially while playing, but my tee time isn't until 10:50 so I might try to get out early and take some pictures before playing or maybe after.

I'm playing #2 next Tues; very much looking forward to it after the early comments.

I'll try and take pictures -- any specific requests from the board?

Writing up my Golfweek review right now; also have a large section of the new postscript to "Discovering Donald Ross" that deals with the work on No. 2. That new edition of the book is due out late May.

No. 2 is now simply stunning. It used to be a grind, with the only interesting shots into and back around the greens. Now every shot counts and is compelling strategically and visually.

Just out of curiosity, does #2 close on Mondays? I am playing in a tournament in Charlotte on Tuesday May 10 and was going to try and play the day before.

Jim,

#2 is open for play on March 21st and 28th.  Not sure about April as it could be "closed" to mostly resort guests then.
I would guess it wouldnt be a problem in May.

All right! I finished my video last night. Here's the link:

http://www.out-and-back.net/?p=2670

I'm fairly happy with how it turned out, though the more I learn about video the more I realize how difficult it is to express a complicated idea in voiceover. Something that looks great in print can sound like gibberish, so I tried to keep it simple. Anyway, some here may enjoy seeing some of the images even if the "script" leaves something to be desired.

But I'm really looking forward to Brad's Golfweek feature--as a Ross expert he'll doubtless knock this one out of the park.

Thanks for watching!

Good work TD. You definitely have the face for voiceovers....;)

It looks WAY more visually interesting than it did before (I have not played there). Does it "look" more like a  C +C course than Ross now? It seems like it to me based on your video, but would like your thoughts.

Nice video.  I really like the before and after shots, the historical photography and the fact that it is short.

Thanks for the video Tom, if I have one small criticism it would be that the music sound track obscured some of the thoughts of the shapers etc.

I had a friend visit there recently, I'll see if I can get his permission to post a few photos that he snapped.

Sean,

Well, there's that, but I also have a really hard time talking to a camera without someone else standing behind it.

As for your question, I'd say "sometimes". That might sound like a bit of a hedge, but it's my best answer. I think it's safe to say that it's not always a literal re-creation of the old Tufts Archives imagery (though some of the bunkers, like front left on 9, are now dead ringers), and that at times the fairway sandscapes are more dramatic than what might have existed in the past.

I will say, though, that I now have a much better understanding of some of the strategies Ross developed at #2. But more importantly, I also have a much greater interest in learning even more about the course. Everyone talks about the greens, obviously, but now so many fascinating concepts from tee to green in play. Kyle Franz told me that it had become one of his favorite 2-3 courses to study, and I can really see why.

I would really appreciate it if we could get some more information about the elimination of the sprinkler heads such as how it was determined as to which would be eliminated, the purpose of it, is the same principle applicable at other courses, etc.

Thanks

Jerry,

Yeah, that's the kind of detail that is difficult to build into a Web-friendly video. Anyway, based on my notes, this is my understanding. If my numbers are slightly off, I hope someone will correct me.

When Pinehurst eliminated the bermuda rough it no longer needed to supply water to those peripheral areas along the fairways, so those rows were removed. The course has returned to single-row irrigation, straight down the centerline of each hole. I believe they went from 1100 to 450 heads. Superintendent Bob Farren told me he estimates that water usage on #2 will be reduced by 40 to 50%.

I wonder what Rees Jones thinks of the renovation?

What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

playability question: crowned greens

Can a well struck 8 iron from a mid single digit handicapper hold a green?

Carl,

doesn't it all depend on how firm/fast the resort keeps the greens?  When I was there a few years ago the whole course reasonably soft and there was zero problem holding the green.  Well struck 4-iron from mid-high handicapper would have been a different story.

The question you raise is the essence of strategic golf.

From the wrong part of the fairway it won't.

From the right part it should.

There are no guarantees in golf.

First LACC, now this.  Fans of strategic design should rejoice!!!!

While I know they eliminated heads and returned much of the rough to a more native like flora, I don't believe they simply have one row of heads right down the middle of every hole. Irrigation design is far advance from the idea of "rows". I find it very admirable that they have reduced non essential turf and returned the course to its roots, but I'm calling BS on the one big sprinkler down the middle of every hole. Tom, if I'm wrong I'll be the first to eat crow, but it doesn't sound right to me.

Don:

I agree that irrigation design is much more sophisticated now, and those fairways are certainly not uniform width anymore.  But if they really got it down to 450 heads, they must not have that much more than a single-row system.  That's 25 heads per hole.  If they've got in & out heads on the greens and 6 more on the tees, that doesn't leave many extra heads to use down the fairway.

The best part of this is 40% less water and everything else that goes along with that.
