GCA's  personal rules maven has a new job.
Accoring to Golfweek's Man Out Front in the March 4th print version

John Vander Borght has been chosen to be the USGA's Director of Rules Communication. A long time GCA poster, he is also the author of the popular blog Freedrop.com. I guess his new post means we'll miss him on these pages. His infatuation wth the Rules of Golf began in Oregon nearly twenty years ago working as a volunteer for the OGA, as did yours truly, then became a rules official on the Futures Tour. Served a stint in Pittsburgh with the WPGA, and moved to the NCGA to start up their junior tour program two years ago. He has aced the PGA/USGA tules test numerous is .

I wish him the best at Far Hills.

NOTE: The Man Out Front was partly wrong. VDB is not taking the post previously held by John Morrissett. And the MOF got the title wrong, it is Manager of Rules Communication.

That's great news. The USGA made a great choice. Congratulations, John.

First met John about 10 years ago at Eastmoreland muni in Portland.  He has a love for the game of golf, and a devotion and appreciation of good architecture.  The USGA is lucky to have someone like him.

Who was John Morrisett!!
It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

I'm happy for John, who seems like a first class guy, but speaking selfishly, I will miss his blog.

John Vander Borght has been chosen to be the USGA's Director of Rules Communication.

What exactly is this position?  i.e. what will John do?

Not quite sure. According to Golfweek, this is his title. It says he replaced John Morrissett, but his title was Director of Rules.

Wow, that was such a long time ago. It was a fun day.

I met John before I even played golf, he was just another computer geek back then. :)

CONGRATS to the big guy!

I remember meeting John back in 1999 down in Pinehurst during one of the first ever GCA gatherings.  He has always been a class act and a great guy who is in LOVE with the rules of golf.

Wishing you the best of luck, my friend.

I have to admit that my favorite non-architecture-related topics on here are the rules questions that come up from time to time. And I always look forward to the healthy debate on how to interpret a vague wording that is quickly put to rest when John chimes in and makes everything so clear. Wish I knew the rules half as well as he does.

Congratulations, JVB!  Well deserved. Does this mean you have to leave the peninsula?  Might be the only downside to the job.

Congrats John!!

I am seriously impressed with the recent USGA appointments. Perhaps the sane have retaken the asylum? Now if we could only see the likes of Fred and Walter removed from any future decisional authority or influence

If you want to tee it up when in the Far Hills area, please feel free to reach out to me. I'd love to host you!

Years and years ago me and Rich Goodale took on John and some red head at Pasatiempo.  We lost.  I'm going outside my comfort zone and congratulating someone who kicked my ass.  Congrats to you John, I am proud to call you a golf bud.

Hey, wait a minute, don't you have to be a born in the good ole USA citizen to be a Director of anything in the USGA?. John, where is that danged birth certificate?

Seriously, hearty congratulations and all best wishes to you in your new post. I cannot imagine anyone knowing more about the Rules than you.

Let's play the Shore again before you leave.
