Another inspirational topic from a maufacturer....
« on: February 18, 2011, 11:39:43 PM »
I received this from an old friend a West Pointer, it revived my affection for the Ping family.

Good story . . .

This is quite a story, and I think it deserves to be sent around the golfing world!

Jane and I have just returned from a short trip to Disney in Orlando to
decompress from the Thanksgiving holiday.   Our plan was to see the holiday
decorations at Disney and while Jane shopped, I would play a little golf.

On Monday, I played the Disney, Lake Buena Vista course.  As usual the
starters matched me with three other players.  After a few holes we began to
get to know each other a bit.  One fellow was rather young and had his wife
riding along in the golf cart with him.  I noticed that his golf bag had his
name on it and after closer inspection, it also said "wounded war veterans".
When I had my first chance to chat with him I asked him about the bag.  His
response was simply that it was a gift.  I then asked if he was wounded and
he said yes.  When I asked more about his injury, his response was "I'd
rather not talk about it, sir".

Over a few holes I learned that he had spent the last 15 months in an army
rehabilitation hospital in San Antonio Texas ..  His wife moved there to be
with him and he was released from the hospital in September.  He was a
rather quiet fellow, however, he did say that he wanted to get good at golf.
We had a nice round and as we became a bit more familiar I asked him about
the a brand new set of Ping woods and irons he was playing.  Some looked
like they had never been hit.  His response was simple.  He said that this
round was the first full round he had played with these clubs.

Later in the round he told me the following.  As part of the discharge
process from the rehabilitation hospital, Ping comes in and provides three
days of golf instruction, followed by club fitting.  Upon dicharge from the
hospital, Ping gives each of the discharged veterans, generally about 40
soldiers, a brand new set of custom fitted clubs along with the impressive
golf bags.

The fellow I met was named Ben Woods and he looked me in the eye and said
that being fitted for those clubs was one of the best things that ever
happened to him and he was determined to learn to play golf well enough to
deserve the gift Ping had given him.  Ben is now out of the service,
medically discharged just a month ago.  He is as fine a young man as you
would ever want to meet.

Ping has the good judgment not to advertise this program.  But the next
time I am in the market for a club, I know what I am going to buy.

God Bless America and the game of golf.

What a great story.  I'm buying everything I can from Ping for the shop this season.

Really neat story. Ping is a breed apart from most companies but I think that's a good thing.

I'm not an American but that is an impressive thing to do in this world of agressive marketing.  I have never bought a Ping club or product but after reading this will look to rectify that this season.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Ping rocks.

Keep in mind that they started the Solheim Cup too.  Granted, it's nothing as meaningful as the service they offered to Mr. Ben Woods, but it was great for the game of golf.

I seem to remember Ping started this a couple of years ago because they'd taken a Ping retailer to court for selling clubs below the MSRP to Veterans.

Word got around via the internet, and as part of a PR stunt they put in place this process so long as the clubs aren't sold at less than the MSRP.

Googling the subject matter should uncover the whole story.

Bob,

I will share a story from one of my personal experiences with Ping and the Wounded Warrior program.

As some of the long time members know, I posted a thread about the American Lake Veterans Golf Club, which many great members of this website sent sets of golf clubs that were provided to wounded Veterans so they could learn the game of golf for free.  One of the inspirational leaders of the American Lake VA Golf Club was a man about 35 years old that was wounded in Iraq.  He was hit with shrapnel that took huge chunks out of his leg and he could not walk without assistance from special crutches.

At the club, Mr. Pepper Roberts, was struggling to find a way that this right handed Veteran could play golf with his injury.  One day, Pepper decided to teach the Vet how to play golf left handed.  So the Vet and Pepper went to work hitting tons of golf balls until he was able to get to a level where he could play the game and get through a full round of 18 holes.  Later that year, he met a Ping representative that learned his story and did a personal fitting with all of the top of the line equipment that they have to offer.  They provided new Driver, fairway woods, irons, putter, and professional bag.  But best of all, they provided all of this equipment without ANY recognition.  It was all about taking care of this one person and providing him equipment to help him play the game.

Regardless what may have happened in the past, Ping is doing great things for our Veterans and I respect the Company for providing some of our returning injured troops free equipment.  Additionally, Ping offers discounts for all Active, Inactive, and Retired military personnel and their spouses.  I think this manufacturer is doing great things and deserves credit for doing so.

That is 100% true.

Glad Ping has changed their tune, they haven't always been so angelic.

I know some accounts have been lost because the pricing policy was not followed. As a consumer,it seems this keeps resale value up and especially prevents that bad taste you get when the club you bought last month has been rendered antique by a new model and dumped into the discount box.The pros I know of who lost the account knew what the policy was and got caught.
