Aerial of the Day #21 - 13 Feb 2002
« on: February 13, 2002, 05:42:44 AM »
Yesterday someone asked why I would post an aerial for Siwanoy when there are so many more highly regarded courses in the region.  Besides that it was a request, I am purposefully not showing all of the top courses all at once.  If I did that, then there'd be nothing left for the future.  I want to get in quality courses that aren't in the magazine rankings.

I have already shown quite a few top courses already, and there aren't that many top 20 or 30 courses left, not to mention that a few of them aren't even available (Sand Hills, Pacific/Bandon Dunes).  I've already shown PVGC, PB, NGLA, the other PD, Seminole, Riviera, Shadow Creek, Fisher's Island, Chicago, Scioto, The Ocean Course, and Interlachen amongst top ranked courses.

I also try to cover all regions of the country each week, with 2 in the East/Northeast, given the sheer volume of high quality courses there.

This week will be a little more about the others.  Here's one that shouldn't be too difficult for several of you, given it's features:

Well, the bermuda kind of gives away its tropical locale. FL or Hawaii? I don't think mapquest covers Hawaii with aerial photos, so i think we are talking about something in south fl.

Bermuda is the standard grass in virtually all warm climates in the U.S., all over the South from as far north as Virginia across through the South/SW locales like Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and the desert areas of southern California.

My club in NC browns out in summer heat waves or mini-droughts.  Could also be overseeding that didn't fill in all the way yet. I know for a fact that this course overseeds.

I really enjoyed the variety of this course even with the forced last hole. I wish I could remember how that Doug McClean song went.

Do you mean Don McLean?  I'm not sure I understand the reference, however.

On the last hole, have you noticed how long of a walk it is from the fairway to the green?  (Hole is upper left corner).  200 extra yards added to the walk.  I have no idea why there isn't a walking bridge there.

Ok - I tried to find an old rock song that contains the name or something very close to it in the refrain. I can sing it but I dont know the name. Meanwhile, I found the same course name in another song that I remember hearing from a sweet lady with the most alluring brogue. Now back to your regularly scheduled clues.

Thanks Scott for such a fun daily diversion.

BE FOREWARNED: The following has NOTHING to do with Golf! Nothing! Not with the architecture of golf. Not with the playing of golf. Not with the Balls & Implements of golf. Nothing!

But I need to tell you about this Sign of the Impending Apocalypse -- and someone mentioned Don McLean, which gives me all the excuse I need:

My daughter's 7th-grade choir will be performing, at its next concert, a medley of '60s and '70s tunes -- including an excerpt from Mr. McLean's "American Pie."

She informs me that, in accordance with the school district's (or perhaps Western Civilization's) zero-tolerance policies, the lyrics have been changed to protect the innocent.

No longer will Good Ol' Boys be drinking whiskey and rye.

No, indeed. Those Good Ol' Boys will be "eating cookies and pie." American pie, I trust.

I'm sort of surprised that the Good Ol' Boys didn't turn into Good Ol' Individuals!

And I'm proud to report: My daughter thinks it's just as stupid as I do. That's my girl!

I"m guessing that there is no practice range (one is not visable in pic).  Is that a 19th hole par 3 to settle bets along the far left edge?

Scott,
The commonly photographed hole on this course, with the zig-zag creek (not lake), is #11, the par 3 with an angled green in the lower right corner.  The creek is partially obscured by a tree shadow.

There is no practice range, but a practice area in the lower left, to the right of that par 3.  I can't remember if there's a net or not.

That par 3 in the lower left is the 118 yard par 3 9th hole.  118 yards from the back of the back tee to the back of the green maybe.  It plays about 100 yards, not even a full gap wedge.

From your discriptions, I can't say the routing is very obvious?  Please tell us how this thing routes once the correct identity is given.  Wild Guess- Sea Pines?

The routing is by no means obvious, partly due to 3 long walks on the course despite being on a small property.

The first long walk is just getting to the first tee, at the bottom of the pic.
2 and 3 along right side, 4 and 5 along top.  6 is par 3 with long narrow green going south.
Long walk to 7th tee (at bottom right of parking lot) going east across water.  Hole is known for tree obstructing approach shot to right half of huge green.
8 comes back west, reachable par 5, with excellent cross bunker on tee shot.
9th is puny par 3 with tee SW of sand.

10 is par 5 going back east, 2nd from bottom.  My vote for best hole on the course.  Can you hit the fairway wood fade to the green? Otherwise in one of two tough bunkers.  Green is below fairway, mostly hidden from tee shot.
11 is par 3 mentioned above, going north.
12 is dogleg right par 4 across pond.
13 dogleg left to "island green in the sand".
14-16 is toughest stretch on course.
Back tee on 14 goes from behind the water (across little bridge visibile) across long stretch to diagonal fairway with cross bunker into the wind.  tough 2nd shot.
15 is long par 4 dogleg left above 14.
16 is par 4 into wind across pond to green.
17 is par 3 with lots of sand (and Strantz' first "scar" bunker in front).
18 back down south with lots of water and long walk WITHIN the hole, mentioned above.

This is none other than Mike Strantz' first solo effort, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, south of Myrtle Beach, SC.

My main complaint is the same as at Tobacco Road, no long par 3's.  Longest was 6-iron for me from back tees (5 par 3's), then 8,9,9, and gap wedge.

Can you explain your reference, Patrick?

Yikes!  I took a look at it and True Blue in a rainstorm 3 years ago and even photographed a couple of holes, including 6-16-17-18 and those along the driveway in, and still didn't recognise it!  I'm a big stupid  :-/  I didn't remember the bridge to 18 was so long of a way around the fronting pond, but do remember there is no appreciable bailout room on the greenside.  I missed the MB clue and for some reason was thinking Hilton Head.  Nice quiz today, Scott.

Scott,
The author of the song I looked for is Van Morrison. There is a song on The Band's Music from the Big Pink that will give the course away as well. The old folk song was a chance rememberance from a trip to Ireland that was rekindled by a Google search.

Scott,

The ref to the zig-zag lake is to the hole in the upper left hand side of the photo.  If memory serves, on of golf mag's top 100 articles (best public in 2000), they had a side article about Stranz with the hole I am thinking of in the background.

By the way, you are an NC guy aren't you?  Fam and I just moved to the area last Sept.
