« on: February 01, 2011, 12:34:07 PM »
Outside of:

Merion East back nine (par 34)
Swinley Forest back nine (par 33)
Old Macdonald  (par 34)

do you know any good or great courses or 9-hole course that have a par 33 or par 34 on one of the nines ?

Pulborough is 34 on both sides.

I think this is going to become a long list of older British courses!

Rolling Green's back nine from the championship tees is a par 34. Of course that includes a 260 yard par three slightly uphill and a 235 yard par three more uphill with a 40 foot dropoff on the right of the green! So much for par!

Plymouth CC, on the south shore of Massachusetts, is an excellent Ross, par 69 course. The front 9 is par 34, with two par 3's, and 7 par 4's. The back 9 is par 35, with 2 par 3's, and 1 par 5 - hole 16.  Incredible green sites. Greens are pure, smooth, and fast.

Each year the tournament holds an invitation only Amateur tournament, The Hornblower, attracting the best players from in and out of state. For the tournament, no holes are altered and it is played as par 69.

Reddish Vale is par 33 going out, and is a very good course indeed. www.rvgc.co.uk

A heck of a lot of 100 year old British courses are very short by modern standards, but top quality nonetheless. A 6,000 yard course can be just as much a challenge as a 7,500 yarder. The ability to belt a ball 300+ yards off the tee does not a better golfer make. It's more of a party piece IMO, and wouldn't do you much good at the Vale!

I like a round of golf to last 3 hours or so, and to be able to pop in and play 5 or 6 holes in an hour in the middle of a working day. What would I want with a 7,500 yard course?

In Ct. there's Fenwick , a 9 hole, par 34 course built in 1896. It's a real throwback, as is Newtown CC (1915), a 9 hole course with par 33/34 from the two sets of tees.

Yale's front 9 is par 34
Fairfield CC's back 9 is 34
Shuttle Meadow's back 9 is 34

For the 2012 US Open, the front nine on The Olympic Club's Lake course will play as a par 34 as #1 will be played as a par 4.

Riverton in South Jersey is a 37 - 34 - 71 layout. I believe this was not the original layout by Donald Ross. The course used to start at what is now the 13th hole but that is in the town of Riverton, which is a dry town. Many years ago the new clubhouse was built at the other end of the course, which is in Cinnaminnson, and they can serve drinks there. Now the course starts with 5 par fours, which is a little unusual. There is only one par 5 on the back, two on the front. Not a great course but a good one.

Philippe:

High Pointe was par 37-34 = 71, and Old Macdonald (already mentioned) 34-37 = 71.

On one of my original routings for Pacific Dunes, par would have been 34-37, and Mr. Keiser objected to that idea, so we kept working on the routing.  Funny how he came around later ... Old Mac was actually a more conventional routing until the last minute, when we moved the 7th green and inserted the 8th hole to wind up with three par-3's on the front nine.

Most of the good ones I'm familiar with in the Northeast have been mentioned...but one of my favorite clubs--not necessarily the greatest course--is Rockland Country Club in Sparkill NY with a 34/37 par

I agree with Tom O that Riverton is an unusual set up at 37 - 34.  Fun tight Don Ross course with small speedy greens.  I played the course way back in High School starting at 13 (by the white halfway house).  The course plays much better in that routing.

Burlington Country Club in NJ used to have a 36 front (2 par 5s) and a 34 back (no par 5s).  Narrow course with small greens.  A renovation in the early part of this century made a world of difference to this course.  Now its 35-35 and has a great mix of long and short par 4s.

Old Mac is a course I am real excited to play.  34 frt nine and 37 back looks strange on paper but from what everyone is saying it is an amazing experience.
