Aerial of the Day #23 (and 24) - 15 Feb 2002
« on: February 15, 2002, 07:28:36 AM »
For the easier of the two, is this just another housing track course?

For the tougher one, you should be able to narrow down the region of the country on this one.  Maine, right?  :)

The first one is pretty easy, but the second one has me stumped so far.

Oh, sure.

Whenever I can figure one out,
it's "pretty easy."

Thanks a bunch.  :P

I think I have it- so here are my hints.

Both courses are joint efforts and each team has ties to Ohio.

Finally figured out your Irish reference, got the Scottish one.  Neither has to do with the way the course plays.

Hints for the second one:

Adam Clayman (obscure, only if you were paying attention a few months ago)

Lithuanian basketball team sweatsuits

More clues:

first one:  high fades abound.

second one:  Adam Clayman played here last year and said he became a member, probably because it was so affordable (hint!).  Don't know if he was kidding or not.

Does anyone remember the Lithuanian basketball team sweatsuits in either the '92 or '96 olympics?  They stood out and Gib P. was probably proud, given one of his favorite bands designed them.  That's a clue as to the architect.

Adam plays now primarily at Pinon Hills.  Lithuanian sweat suits were tie-dyed, so Grateful Dead must be the reference.

I still have NO FREAKIN' CLUE WHICH EITHER OF THESE IS.

It's past the deadline.  Spill.  I want to feel stupider than normal.

Long week, Tom?  You still don't know the second one given you gave it away in your post?  The clue referring to the architect was also stated in your post.  "tie-dye", as in Ken.

I don't know the Ohio connection.

Here's the clues to the first one:

Irish (town name)
Scottish (name of course)
High fades
Link to Ohio

Now please realize I only "gave away" the clue because it's after the time limit.  I wouldn't do that when it was still up for grabs!

And I still don't know either.  Ken Dye's done a lot of courses.  Paa-Ko Ridge?  Cabo San Lucas CC?  I honestly don't know.

And the first one I still don't know either.  Ok, so it's a Nicklaus course with a name I likely ought to know.  It's just not coming to me.

I am stubborn enough to continue to want to prove my stupidity though with these posts... so no more clues, just spill!  I'm happy to kick myself afterward...

In the spirit of post-deadline ruining things and with a total lack of sense of humor...

The first one is Muirfield Village.  Maybe if you would have spotted me a few letters or given the initials you could have made it even easier.  I told you I was itchin' to appear stupid, and I have succeeded mightily.

That just doesn't LOOK like MV, as I picture it.. the holes I know, I don't recognize.  Maybe it's the black and white.

My guess for the 2nd is now Hawktree in ND.  But that's so damn obscure you'd be evil to do that...  ;)

Huck, your a braver man than I to hazard a guess.  I also was going to come right out and say MV, but I have already demonstrated I'm a big stupid on the New Caledonia Fish and Golf Club, having ACTUALLY photographed a few holes and still missed it with a dumb guess! >:(

Well Dick, as confirmed to me in a message from my bud Dan Kelly, it's MUIRFIELD (Scotland) Village in DUBLIN (Ireland city) Ohio.  Jack and Des, yep.  High fades.  You'd think I could have gotten it earlier...

But hey, I have no problem others confirming my stupidity.  This occurs in conversations with my wife on a daily basis.   ;)

The photo of the second one immediately brought back memories... cross country road trips to obscure and rural areas of America simply for remarkable, beautiful and affordable golf...I miss those days.

I played the final five holes of the second course as a huge storm approached...the excitement of aiming a tee shot out over a desert canyon (or any dramatic hazard) in hopes of a gusting wind to bring it back into play...

I guess the second course plays out like a mastercard commercial:

Road Atlas: $8
Gas: $100
Greens Fees: $14  (circa 1996)

Playing golf in beautiful scenery on a great, hidden golf course:  Priceless.

Tom,
When I said you already gave away #2, I literally meant it.  You said Adam Clayman is a member at Pinon Hills (my clue was correct).  The answer is Pinon Hills.

Once called (and still considered) one of the best bargains in the country.  It opened up at $11 in 1989 and maxes out on weekends at $25 now.  Located in the remote location of Farmington, NM.

For MV,
The 18th is above the @, yes.  Famous 12th over water is far left, upper corner.

Par 4 14th has the famous sweeping green where a Tour player hit the far left, ball rolled to top of hill, then back down to front right and in the hole.

Narrow, reachable par 5 15th follows.

539 yard, par 5 5th is far right (dogleg right), where Tiger hits 2-iron, 2-iron to reach in two.

Here's the GCA write-up: http://www.golfclubatlas.com/muirfieldvillage1.html

I can honestly say that if this is my new home course I don't recognize it. Perhaps I have a dislexic like inability to see from the aerials but I'd bet a fourtune it ain't pinion hills.

Adam,
Maybe I missed a post back when you said you joined, but I thought that you lived in the Coachella Valley somewhere, after moving from Monterrey.  If so, isn't that a long commute to Pinon?

Feel free to comment on features of the course.

Adam,

It took me awhile to get my bearings but it definitely is Pinon Hills. The first hole is at the top left, the par 5 18th with the diagonal cross bunkers is in the top center (at least that's how they were when I played it a few years ago, though they may have reversed the nines since).

This course definitely is still one of the top bargains in the country, even at the grossly inflated fees they're charging now ($20+??). Ken Dye used the barrancas and elevation changes on the property very nicely, particularly on the par 3s. One par 3 plays across a deep ravine to a narrow green perched on its edge; another plays from any number of different tees strewn across a hillside down into a green in a bowl. Another feature I like is that the tee shots appear harder than they are--the fairways widen appreciably in the landing zones, which is excellent for a public course like this. Then there are the principal features of the course--the greens nearly every one has multiple tiers, not just stairstep but within the greens themselves there can be many subtiers. Now from my perspective Ken Dye may have overdid this, but on the other hand it was an adventuresome and intriguing approach to a public municipal facility, and adds to the overall fun and challenge of playing the course.

This is a must play if you're within a couple hundred miles of the Four Corners area, which of course you all visit regularly... ;D

All The Best,

Only a ------------ would notice, and only a seriously disturbed ------------- would bother to say so, but...

The 18th at Muirfield Village is not above the @.

It's above the c-in-a-circle Copyright notation.

Which raises interesting intellectual-property-law questions...

But let's not go there.
