What Courses Have the PG attached to the First Tee?
« on: January 21, 2011, 10:21:10 AM »
I have always liked this feature.  After seeing it again at White Bear, I did it at the Quarry.

When I worked at Glencoe GC in Illinois, they had the back of some par 3 tees converted to putting greens so golfers could do something while waiting to play.

It seems kind of old timey, but on the first tee, really convenient, too.  I saw it mentioned on another thread and wonder if any of you have examples.

the back tee at Atlantic City is on the putting green.  I remember teeing it up very high and making more of a baseball swing because I had been known on occasion to take a divot with a driver while still hitting a pretty good drive.

I think their resources would have been better spent on eliminating the waiting...

Scioto's putting green went into the tee

The Monster at Concord's back tees were originally putting greens

Apache Stronghold.

Our putting green at Pensacola CC has two feet of fairway cut grass between the putting surface and the tips and #2 tees.  The driving range is on the other side of the putting green.  It's the most convenient set up I've ever see.

The tenth tees are at the other end of the range.  #1 and #10 are parallel with the driving range in between.

Not attached to the tee box but....the 18th green at Wanango CC in Oil City, PA has the putting green similarly attached. Makes you think twice when hitting into said green. I wonder if that was an original design to the hole?

I would think the putting green attached to the first tee is a better set up.

Two that I can think of off the top of my head are the back tees at Loblolly Pines and The Bear's Club.

At Secession the practice green is attached to (i.e. is a part of) the 18th green. For some of us that's probably a more appropriate place.

It's ironic this thread is posted today.

I'm just finishing up a long-range golf course improvement plan for a club where there's neat opportunity to connect the back tee at the 1st hole with the putting green. This is my recommendation. The club has recently planted a hedge around the back tee to "separate" these two features, and I'm getting some resistance to removal of the hedge.

I look forward to this list developing so I can cite more good examples where the 1st tee and the putting green are connected.

The practice tee, putting green and 1st tee are one continuous entity at Renaissance Club

Jeff:

I don't know if it's still the case today but when it was new Metedeconk in New Jersey had some tees (at least the 1st and 10th) that were putting green grass and cut. They had some cups and small pins on the back of them. I'd seen that before on ACCC's first tee but it was a bit off putting to tee off on grass like that and particularly since if at all possible I always liked to tee off on a first hole in competition with a 1 iron. But on that Metedeconk first tee the thought of taking a divot on grass and a cut like that was just too much so I just teed it high and took out the driver.

If I designed a connected putting green to first tee at a course called "Old Corkscrew" it would be a curvy, twisting walk from green to first tee.....

Hawks Ridge outside of Altanta have cups on all the Par 3 tee boxes - they have bent grass and roll the tee boxes.

I have not been back in 3 years so it might have changed.

Butterfield CC in Oak Brook Il, has the back tee for the first hole, forget what nine, actually ON the putting green.  Plus it's on a slight downhill lie which makes teeing off in front of the clubhouse, ON THE PUTTING GREEN, just a wee bit nerve wracking.

Inverness Club is the same way.

Canton Brookside's putting green runs into 10 tee.

The Golf Club's putting green is on the back of 18 green which is only a few paces from the first tee.

I think this topic was discussed several years ago. There used to be a small practice putting green between the back of the 1st tee and the golf shop on the Lake Course at the Olympic Club. In the mid-1980's, the teeing area was extended backwards to lengthen the hole by another 10-15 yards and the putting green was eliminated.

The PGA Village Dye course has the PG right next to the first tee.  I like to be able to putt and distract myself from watching groups who all hit two balls each and take forever to get off the first tee (maybe a first tee ettiqute would be a worthwhile OT subject).

I'm a fan of this feature. I have recommended it to Corey for his first tee. Since the putting green is woefully inadequate, making this slight change would immpress all those who just laid out $35 to play.

There's a course in the east bay that has this feature. I'm having a hard time recalling the name. I think it's where Tommy Bolt use to either play or was the pro.

David Tepper, Really enjoyed you today on CNBC. Great stuff.

The 18th green at my club is mown flush with the practice putting green.  If they utilized the rear practice portion of the green as a back hole location on 18, it would be one of the most fearsom Biarritz/Punchbowl combination greens around!!

Last summer at Cherokee we converted our North Course greens to an ultra dward Bernmuca. In connection with the conversion we merged the 1st tee and the PG. We also now cut holes in the tee so you can putt while you wait to go off.

Members are very pleased with it. Plus, it looks cool.
