Australia - bad timing
« on: January 20, 2011, 08:28:29 AM »
I'm visiting Australia to play in a reciprocal clubs event at Royal Melbourne betwen 20-25th March. Sadly Mrs C can no longer come so I'm able to add a week either side of RM for travel and entertainment.

Is there anone here who cannot do Scott's Boomerang but able to sneak a couple of days at Barnbougle or know of an outing around that time who'd welcome a Brit on board? Visiting as a single is a) too leggy and b) not as much fun.

Also I'm booked into a $170 a night hotel for the RM event but that is obviously rather excessive now I'm alone. Can anyone suggest a cheap B&B near RM (walking distance if poss) or lend me your sister for the week?

Mark,

Victoria golf club, right across the street from Royal Melbourne has on-site accommodations (I'm not sure of the price). I imagine you need to be playing there for part of your stay to be granted access, but Victoria should already be on your itinerary.

Chaplington Sr.,

We looked into Victoria GC for accom when we're in Melbourne before the Boomerang - it was good value for room + golf but was sadly booked out for the dates we wanted. Jacket and tie in the clubhouse apparently, though where that puts many people off I realise it just sweetened the deal a bit more for you!

The jacket will be packed before the golf clubs.

We have a great picture of 8 of us standing on the lawn outside of the Chicago Golf Club clubhouse for a team photo. It was high 90s with very high humidity so the jackets went on, "smile", flash and back off in the wink on an eye!

Australia is slightly eyewatering at the moment. Last time I was there I got nearly $3 to the pound now it's $1.5 to the pound. SYD-MEL-SYD is more expensive than LHR-JFK-LHR.

Current plan is RM, KH, Metro and hopefully NSW, chill out in Sydney and visit a mate in rural Victoria.

What area of country vic does your friend live in?  If you're heading north of Melbourne would like to catch up (if I don't catch up with you in Melb.)

Mark,

Go to Adelaide and skip Sydney.  You'll play better golf courses and drink better wine.  You'll also encounter a much better class of Australian than those that reside in Sydney ;)

We'd be happy to have you in Brisbane, but outside a game at RQ - there isn't a great deal to do here, and most of our city is in flood recovery mode.  My entire home went under water only last week!

Duncan - really sorry to hear that.

The Daily Telegraph paper has just published a list of eight comparable things a tourist may buy (local beer, coke, sunscreen, meal for two, etc). The results are astounding;

Portugal - £32.84
Spain - £36.68
Mexico - £45.36
USA - £92.47
Australia - £157.51

Don't believe everything you read.  I guarantee you that in general I can eat just as well in USA as I can in Spain for a comparable price - if not cheaper.  These figures look so skewed that I am wondering if you copied them right!

The aussie price is probably based on Perth pricing, the biggest rip off city in Australia (insert sad smiley here)

I can vouch for the Aussie figure.  Australia is fearsomely expensive for a British tourist at the moment.  We had a fantastic time, including a great round of golf with Matt Day, but if we didn't have our daughter over there we wouldn't be going back.
2014 to date: not actually played anywhere yet!
Still to come: Hollins Hall; Ripon City; Shipley; Perranporth; St Enodoc

good to see you made it back to sunny Yorkshire safely, you'll be happy to know we are looking forward to 40 celsius in Friday again.....

Perth is hands down the most expensive Australian city for a lot of things at the moment, you guys have had it so good with the exchange rate for so long though it must be a shock to only get $1.58 for each pound instead of $2.50 like it used to be.

I'm just glad the Poms are starting to experience how it has been for Aussie tourists going the other way for 20 years - ie. get towelled on the exchanged rate and win the Ashes convincingly ;D

Figures taken from the Post Office annual price comparison, fixed goods and services across the world to get a genuine view on costs.

Portugal is still genuinely cheap.

Scott how much is a pint in a sensible bar in Sydney?

Chappers,

Portugal is definitely one of the few genuine bargains to be had in Europe.

To answer your question, Chappers, a schooner (425ml - three-quarters of a pint) at a normal but not over posh pub around Sydney will be somewhere in the region of $4.50-$5, which works out at $6.66 a pint, which is £4.16.

You've only got your own currency to blame - when I moved to London in Nov 2008 the pound was worth $2.42, two years later it is $1.58!

Chappers - that sounds like either Clare (wine country) or Wallaroo (yorke peninsula coast).

If you make it to Adelaide, let us know.

Chappers

Small world.
I played in the Moonta Charity Ambrose in August 2010.  It was in my top 10 for 2010.  Black scrapes for greens.  A nice bit of movement in the course.

Benje

ps I think I played about 10 games in 2010......
