Sean,

If I'm reasonably young compared to you then I hope you have your affairs in order... ;D  And if you do come by the Windy City, I'd love to show you around to some of our food and drink establishments, which unlike golf courses are second to none.....

Nick:

Depending upon your pocket book and preferences -- head southeast to Charleston, SC. Great town and full range of different courses all relatively closeby. The Ocean Course at Kiawah has hosted a Ryder Cup and will host a forthcoming PGA.

Doak's point on Boston or Providence is a good one.

The other Northeast option is coming the NYC metro area -- focus on Long Island if you can -- plenty of superior privates and a few public ones of note -- most notably Bethpage Black, to name just one. You also have the Apple to visit when not golfing.

I would have to say Long Island/Met.  Could be an epic trip.

I'll add onto Tom D's note about Boston / Providence and drop you into Newport. I the summer it's a blast - lots a quaint cool places (from Misquamicut to Kittansett) along that southern shore with a very unique fell & away from the masses on Cape Cod.

I'd head to Philly or Southampton.

How about if you have four days and don't want to drive too much:

Day 1: Maidstone & Sebonack
Day 2: Shinnecock & NGLA
Day 3:  Westhampton & Friars Head
Day 4:  Drive to tip of north fork, rent boat, cruise to Fishers Island, play 36.

I haven't seen it, but based on the news of what is happening at Southampton Golf Club I'd add it to the list and drop Maidstone.

On the same trip but on the public side how about Montauk Downs? You would also have to drive by the Lobster Roll a.k.a "Lunch" in Amagansett where any sane person would be inclined to stop.

You could certainly add a fifth day and not have to drive very far and still play and eat well.

Heck, you could go for 8 days, never leave LI (except for the excursion to Fishers), play 36 every day but only 18 at any particular course, and still be playing incredible courses -- add to the list abouve Garden City, Creek Club, Piping Rock, Atlantic, Deepdale, The Bridge, post-Doak North Shore, etc.

Tim:

I played Montauk Downs again this past summer and frankly the greens there require a good shoulder-turn to get the ball to the hole. The place has plenty of grass but they don't get it to the point where the bounce of the ball can have a reason to run out somewhat.

NY State has done some good things but if someone wants an east end public option head to Tallgrass -- closer to the main highways and less congested during peak summer months.
