2011 What is the plan?
« on: January 01, 2011, 09:27:21 AM »
I really liked the 2010 Wish List thread and thought I would start a similar one for 2011.  What is your plan for the year?

I've got arrangements to visit Scotland for the first time.  I am beyond excited.

A client of mine wants to go to Bandon later in the year.  Since he's a client, I guess I have to go with him.   8)

I need to get back to Pinehurst and check out the "new" #2.

I hope to have a great tour of Michigan.  As my sister-in-law just moved there, it would be rude if I didn't visit her.   :)

And I really hope to check out a lot of unique golf courses.  Penny Branch in SC, Callahan Golf Links in GA.

Of course one of the real joys in this is bumping into other GCA'ers, which I've tried to arrange with every trip.

Happy New Year everyone.  I hope your 2011 is amazing!!
Sportsman/Adventure loving golfer.

My plan?  To be able to afford golf in 2011.  Pretty simple, actually.

All roads lead to Old Mac, and hopefully a few others that have been on my bucket list as well.

Wear MSU gear after getting demolished at The Grudge Match.

Jud,

I fixed your post for you. ;D
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

These are musings with some entrenchment in the potential...

1.  Crash at a college friend's place on LI, with plans to play Eisenhower Red (Emmett), all the courses at Bethpage (one of the wee perquisites of being an NY resident)

2.  Continue the perverse plan to play all the William Harries courses out there (by my count, only Turin Highlands and Oneonta CC remain)

3.  Depending on how much KLynch rabidly froths after reading "True Links," make plans to travel with him to Bandon or some other, linksy place

4.  Embark upon a "Travis Trek" and hit Stafford (haven't been on it in over 20 years), Yahnundasis, Scranton and others.

5.  Play the fine courses of OBX

6.  TBD

Hang out at Erin Hills during the U.S. Amateur this year.

See in person Big Foot CC and Tripoli CC, two Wisconsin Bendelow courses that fly well below the radar of most other courses here.

Return to play Lawsonia at the Midwest Mashie.

Collect on my bet w/ Tigerman -- should be able to claim it by day's end... ;D

I would love to get back to the NE to see some of those early courses we talk about.  I was there twice about two years ago, and saw Newport, Essex, and Cape Arundel (in a rainstorm), but was denied Myopia and Fishers Island access and bypassed some great courses in NY, RI and NH when I had the chance, due to lack of geographic knowledge.

Start graduate school...

That probably wasn't what you meant, Mac! I am heading to Bandon in March but this year is probably going to be a slow one on the golf front for me. I'm heading back to Indiana in May as well and hope to add another trip or two once I figure out my class schedule.

In June, hoping to get to Long Island for the first time.  Sebonack likely, other courses TBD.

In July, visiting Ballyneal for the 4th time.  Will combine that with a first time visit to Prairie Dunes.

Throughout the summer, plan on seeing several Chicagoland courses, including Shore Acres and Beverly.

I need to get back to Bandon, but it won't be this year. :'(

My first trip to south Florida is coming in February, I'm very excited to play Calusa Pines and I've been wanting to play Black Diamond for a very long time.  We will hopefully have time to squeeze Sugarloaf into the trip as well.

In March I will be making my second trip to Hilton Head.  I'm really looking forward to a second shot at Harbour Town, being a short, straight hitter I know I can improve on my 73 from last time.

In May a trip to visit my Aunt will hopefully result in playing some very nice courses in the Columbus, Ohio area as well as some courses with the wife in Kentucky and Indiana.

In July the wife and I will be making our second trip to the RTJ Trail, this time we plan on visiting the courses in the northern part of the state.

Living in the sandhills of North Carolina, I hope to have the chance to play Dormie Club sometime this year.

I hope to play lot of golf in Michigan and just enough in Tennessee to keep my handicap from doubling.  Anything else in 2011 will be a bonus.

I don't have many plans formalized yet, but so far:

Silloth/Seascale/Formby in June

TOC/New/Castle in October

Maybe play Tenby in March.

Maybe a Buda game/extra in September.

Lots of ideas for games, but my focus will be on Alwoodley & Notts.  I want to play a few heathland courses down London way - Woking, Worplesdon, Sunny Old and Walton Heath.

Maybe head to CALIFORNIA in the summer.  I have never been to California and of course if I did go I would hope to get a few games in.  Anyway, I am serious enough to have started some research.

Ciao

Get home.  See my wife.  Swim with my dog.

Work on a golf course for a lucky super in South Texas while on some off time.

Get out to Ballyneal and spend as much time there as they'll let me

See a course or two in Nebraska

Deplete Gib's wine cellar

Beat Wyatt Halliday in a match

Visit the site of a course being built

Needlessly blow a few bucks on a couple new clubs

Continue traveling, playing, working on the turf degree, and anything else golf related

Nothing major just a trip to Cape Breton to play when Cabot Links opens later this summer and if lucky try and get a round in at Highland Links as well.
Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

Jeff,
Lack of geographic knowledge?  Had you not heard of maps?

Good luck getting your trip in this year...if you plan to come through western New York, let me know and we can hit some shells.

Ryan, that is an AMAZING year you have planned.  I think that you are setting the proper tone by playing a lot of golf on the honeymoon.  Best wishes.

Hamilton Island in February to see the new course.

A week on the Melbourne Sandbelt in March.

Long weekend at Barnbougle in March with 30-odd GCAers.

Watching my home course get improved by Mike Clayton's crew.

I'd really like to also play Royal Adelaide and Royal Queensland if I get the chance.

Missus wants to take a short trip to either New Zealand, China or South Africa later in the year - whichever gets selected I'm taking the clubs!

Not bad for what I thought would be a let-down year after galavanting around the UK and US from 2008-2010!! ;D

The big excitement for 2011 will be a trip to Philadelphia and New York in the spring. A few days before I go I will start a thread asking who will host me at Pine Valley, Merion, and Shinnecock, hilarity will ensue.

January - I was supposed to go to Arizona in a couple of weeks but instead will be going to Duluth for my daughter's first figure skating competition  I will use the ticket to go somewhere else this winter

April - tentatively thinking of Teeth of the Dog (was planning on Kapalua but they are punching the greens that week)

May - will be at Yale for a graduation and may try and play (although I have to think that is a tough weekend)

August - annual Spencer Iowa tournament

Wish list includes Lawsonia (just a bit too far for a weekend drive), Waveland in Des Moines (Childhood course) and Giants Ridge/Northland (it has been a few years)

And people tell me the financial crisis is not over !  ;)

A wild guess... I suppose you guys don't work in the golf industry ?

Having said that, I've promised myself to replace my laser level & boots with my clubs whenever possible, or just buy a bigger car. And maybe, just maybe, I'd like to play a few links on the Dutch & Belgium coast this year.
