New weekly series: For every poster a list...
« on: December 29, 2010, 03:02:33 PM »
After reading some posts on a recent ratings thread, I'd like to offer the following as a weekly series:

Each week would feature one poster, and a list of his choosing (top 10 overall, top 10 in his state/region, top 10 hidden gems, top 10 tournament courses, etc).

Everyone else could then ask questions based on the list. The idea would be to really force one person at a time to flesh out his ideas about gca.

Yay or nay?

Suggestions for lead-off hitters?

Unfortunately for you, I made a decision that the first person to respond would be the first person featured...so prepare your list! The thread goes up Monday...

 :)

Note: This does not mean anyone else responding is committed...post away.

I will do a list for you.  And I'll take suggestions here on what list they would like to see from me.

Personally, I'd like to see a list of everyone's favorite courses, as opposed to "best".  IMHO that would give a better insight into what's important to the given poster...

Suggestions for Tom's list

Top ten courses I'd like to pretend never happened and start over with the same land.

(George even if you plead I'm not doing it. Looking at Top ten lists is my dirty little secret. In theory I abhor them  Good for you to make sure people flesh them out.)

I read the exchange which prompted this and would have bet a large stack that you'd do this.

As per usual,a great idea and thanks for doing it.

Okay, here are some suggestions:

For Tom D:

Top 5 C&C courses (it would be unfair to ask your own, figured you might share some insight on C&C's - if you don't like that, let's say top 10 English courses or if you want to go in a different direction, top 10 courses of the '80s)

For Phil Young:

Top 5 Tillie courses

For Brad Klein:

Top 5 Ross courses

For Matt Ward:

Top 5 sub-6500 yard courses :)

For Jim Sullivan:

Top 5 courses for top amateur events

-----

Feel free to suggest your own. In the interest of maximizing participation, I think each person featured should choose his own list, but I'm open to ideas.

Since Tom D asked for suggestions (although this could apply to any other of the well-travelled experts here), I'd love to get a top x of courses that an aspiring GCA appreciator should play or walk to learn from. Pesumably that means the courses should be reasonably accessible to an active GCAer (by that I include many private courses that in the current climate are accessible to someone who can write a respectful letter or make a respectful phone call and can exhibit a bit of knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject).

Another way to frame this would be what are the top X courses that you'd take someone to who's trying to accelerate his knowledge and appreciation of gca.

Excellent suggestion, Chris. I think I'd rather see Tom address your list than mine.

Tentative schedule:

Next week: Jud
Week of 1/9: Tom D
Week of 1/16: Bill McBride - thanks for volunteering, love your list idea - hope you include some overseas favorites

More to follow...

Mercifully,Pat Boone's musical stylings would probably have not been well received on 125th street.

Sean,

Just find your preferences somewhat in line with my own.  Love to see your top 10 GB&I Hidden Gems list for instance....

George,

I have several possible lists in mind and will post more than one if you're amenable....

Whew. getting lumped with Matt on anything makes me nervous.  ;) But already I fail at this. I have only really played the biggies over in Scotland and Ireland. Sean Arble is the one you want to hear from.

10 best greens you’ve seen

Mac,

Since I'm back to blogging (see link below) I expect I'll take that on in January as part of my writing.
My worry is whether I can remember the details well enough to write why.

There are so many "different" reasons to admire a green.

This is an awful presumptuous thread, is it not?  It is based on opinion and experience of/with courses played, which are never a complete list for anyone.  Ultimately, it's a fun diversion, correct?

The reason I ask is, I could probably count 200-300 courses played, yet I cannot come up with any defining list of any breadth.  My lists would be so narrow, along the lines of "most enjoyable mountain courses in Vermont with the initials R.M." or "Finest national clubs in the Virginias named Pete Dye, Ballyhack or Kinloch."

Y'all get my drift?  I hope that the entrants are not greeted with "ARE YOU KIDDING?  How can you include XXX at the expense of YYY?"  I'm thinking that there should be a moratorium ond ebate declared for the purpose of enjoying this thread.
