Shinnecock and National - I played these on the same day.  i would love to play them again given the knowledge I've gained on this website.

Interlachen - It's only 3 miles from my house.  So near, but yet so far.

Olympia Fields N - I played there quite a few times in the late 90s; I would love to see it again.

Pasatiempo - I played this only once in the late 90s.  I know I would like it even more today.

Royal County Down - My favorite course.  An extrodinary setting.
Ballybunion - Remote, rugged, what links golf is all about.
Pacific Dunes - So many options and different ways to play.
Ballyneal - Seems to get better each time I visit.  Pure golf.
Lahinch - Fun, fun, fun, fun.....

1.  Sand Hills.  For me, and what I've played, as good as it gets.  I loved the options and angles from the tee, the greens were superb, and the setting is tough to beat.  Helps I played with a few good GCA.comers, to boot.

2.  Ballyneal.  Fun, fun, fun (well, the day it was 38 degrees, raining, and blowing wasn't as fun as the day before when it was 70!)

3.  Interlachen.  I want some more Ross!

4.  Torry Pines So.  I know it gets very little love around here, but I thought it was a great test of golf, the holes along the ocean were well done, and I've not played a tougher, better hole (OK, maybe 18 at SH) than no. 12.

5.  Hazeltine National.  I admit I like to play where I've watched (in person and on TV) the pros play.  Perhaps why I like Torrey So. as well.  Also, Hazeltine is good for many reasons, it's difficult, but playable.  I think you need to make good decisions off the tee, as well as drive the ball well.  Further, the greens are big enough to require some thought as to where to place shots into them.

I thought I'd touch base on this again...for no particular reason...

1...The Old Course, the best course I've played by a wide margin

2...Pinehurst #2...ideal golf for my taste

3...The Golf Club...an ideal golf club, a great walk, an some great shots

4...Shinnecock Hills...damn near a perfect golf course...and the company is good on this one!

5...Shoreacres...see The Golf Club comments.  I loved the feel.

T1: Merion / Oakmont - The only 2 truly great classic courses in the United States I have ever played. I have no idea if I will ever play either again and if I received an invite I would drive through the night to be there. Besides, has anyone actually ever turned down an invite to either?

3) Pasatiempo - I loved it when I played it before I had any interest in GCA. Now I wantto see some of what I missed. Andthen there's the recent reno...

4) TOC - see post 3 minus the reno.

T5) Gozzer Ranch / Medinah 3 - I didn't see what all the fuss was about. I would love a return visitto either confirm or disprove my initial impressions.

NB. Ballyneal has to be on this list somewhere because playing it was the most fun I ever had on a golf course.

I enjoy this thread because it doesn't require "best" or "most." It requires something spirituals and defining, the essential string of our hearts...

The sad part about this thread is, I can't list certain courses I'd like to play (M, NGL, CP, LA, ET AL) as I've yet to trod their blades...

1. The Old Course...from my vantage point, having played it once at age 25, the explication is obvious...

2.  Pinehurst #2...played it once, at age 16...would be great to see something completely different that matters...

3.  Any of the first 3 Bandons...haven't played the 4th...it is the quintessential golfing kingdom along a pluralistic shore

4.  Yale...despite its freshness, I would choose this course over any other I've played to play every day, the rest of my life.

5.  Old Town Club...played it once, trying out for Wake Forest's team...didn't need a second round of tryouts (Billy Andrade and Len Mattiace weren't threatened) but would kill for a second run...Kye Goalby keeps threatening to get me out there :)

Might have made it, but didn't:
Fox Chapel...was restricted to five and BY MAC, I stuck to just five!!
BBlack, Pete Dye, Kinloch~All too fresh...need a bit of nostalgia.
Arcadia Bluffs, Kohler Kourses~You know, just not feeling them.

Five That I Would Play That Would Be In NO ONE'S First Five:
1. Kittansett
2. Myopia Hunt
3. Eastward Ho! (by this point, you can tell I have a jones for New England)
4. Baltimore CC East (Five Farms)
5. Pasatiempo (Gots to have a Mackenzie)
Coming in 2024
~Elmira Country Club
~Soaring Eagles
~Bonavista
~Indian Hills
~Maybe some more!!

I think I could easily get by with playing just three for the rest of my days: The Old Course, National and Ballyneal. Maybe I could risk the lyme disease and cut through the woods for a couple of holes at Shinnecock every once in a while.

Great thread Mac.  I missed it first time around.  I could never restrict it to just 5 as there is so many I want to go and see again.  If I had 5 days to live and golf was the way I chose to spend my time, and logistics made it possible, this would be my 5 that I have already visited.  Descending order to finish at my favourite.

5. TOC
4. Pine Valley
3. Cypress Point
2. Muirfield
1. North Berwick (late evening round with my 3 best pals)
2011 highlights- Royal Aberdeen, Loch Lomond, Moray Old, NGLA (always a pleasure), Muirfield Village, Saucon Valley, watching the new holes coming along at The Renaissance Club.

Muirfield - started at 4ish after a particularly lubricating lunch and remember little more than a visit from the macallan ambassador making a timely entrance on the 10th tee.
Dornoch - had top n tailed and was a particularly frosty day amongst playing partners after a lack of sleep. Didn't fully get it (yet).
Co Sligo - absolute torrential rain. Supposedly it has good views??
GCGC - led astray and didn't fully understand it. So blurry got the architect wrong...
RCD - because of this http://www.puregolf2010.com/the-most-magnificent-links-in-the-world/

North Berwick--played it 21 years ago and I knew it was awesome just didn't know why; I've learned a lot about golf course architecture and what I like (eg quirk) since then

Muirfield--played it on the same trip 21 years ago and it is one of my top 5 all-time favourite courses

Royal Dornoch--I know it's great just need to play it again to appreciate it more

Pasatiempo
Lahinch
Portrush
Kiawah
Bethpage/ Torrey South.

The MacKenzie course has me scratching my head the first time around.  Local knowledge would go along way in Pasatiempo & Lahinch.
