COMPOSITE/ECLECTIC Bandon Resort Course
« on: November 23, 2010, 10:38:47 PM »
Give me your best COMPOSITE Bandon Resort Course.  You can only choose 1 of each of the numbered holes.  For example, for your #1, you must choose the first hole on one of the four courses.  For your #2, it must be the second hole, and so on.

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I am surprised so far at what I perceive to be an under-representation of Old Mac considering many think it to be the 1st/2nd best course there.

JC,

I think that it shows the quality and depth of the holes on the proerty.  Some of those were very tough choices for me.  For example, I think that all the 3rd holes on the property are outstanding.  I would not argue with anyone's choice for that one.

Seriously, how many holes their does one dislike?  For me there are only 4 holes that I dislike out of 72.  That's pretty amazing, considering I can probably find more than that on just about any one course.

I have done this at least twice on here and I'm sure that my answers were different before. The only thing made clear by this exercise is that the #4s are the absolute best at the resort. The worst #4 could replace the best of some other #s on this list.  Likewise, the #9s are the weakest.

#1 Trails
#2 Pacific
#3 Pacific
#4 Dunes
#5 Pacific
#6 Pacific
#7 Old Mac
#8 Pacific
#9 Dunes
#10 Pacific
#11 Pacific
#12 Dunes
#13 Pacific
#14 Trails
#15 Pacific
#16 Old Mac
#17 Trails
#18 Old Mac

this is fun, as the choices are tough!

#1 Trails, great view from the black tee
#2 Trails, sand, trees, green, wind!
#3 Old Mac, over the top
#4 Pacific, two great shots here
#5 Bandon, classic bottle, even now w/o the gorse
#6 Pacific, one of my favorites
#7 Old Mac, brilliant
#8 Trails, love it, what a green!
#9 Bandon, eagle opportunity!

#10 Bandon, hit it big, to a semi blind short and tough 2nd
#11 Trails, like the setting of the green and back drop of trees
#12 Bandon, great par 3
#13 Pacific, best hole on property?
#14 Trails, birdie/double, it's great/it sucks, no margin, LOL
#15 Bandon, devil's asshole (a Bandon original)
#16 Bandon, is that a flag out there?
#17 Old Mac, a classic reborn
#18 Old Mac, classic punch bowl, shake the starters hand, thank you very much!
It's all about the golf!

This time with hole by hole rankings:

1- BT, OM, PD, BD (amazing how all 4 ease you into the round)
2- PD, OM, BT, BD (shoe bunker swings the vote here)
3- OM, PD, BT, BD (perhaps the toughest to call)
4- BD, PD, OM, BT (BD gets the vote because the reveal happens during your play of the hole, not while walking to the tee)
5- BD, OM, BT, PD (sentimental favorite here)
6- PD, BT, OM, BD (just a tad more interest at PD over BT)
7- PD, OM, BD, BT (give me two more plays at OM and this might switch)
8- OM, PD, BT, BD (put the pin in the back at PD and I might change my mind)
9- BT, PD, OM, BD (the weakest combo of the bunch)
10- PD, OM, BD, BT (love how this hole plays with the different winds)
11- PD, OM, BT, BD (no doubter)
12- BD, OM, PD, BT (complete toss up, ask me again in a week)
13- PD, BT, OM, BD (BD is a fading 4th here)
14- BT, PD, BD, OM (my least favorite hole at OM)
15- BT, BD, OM, PD (perhaps the best green setting north of Monterey)
16- OM, BD/PD (tie), BT (and I really like 16 at BT)
17- PD/BT (tie), OM, BD (another strong group)
18- OM, PD, BT, BD (first time around OM I was looking forward to the approach on 18 after getting a peak at the green while walking to the first tee, the ultimate anticipation payoff)

BD: 3, PD: 6, BT: 3, OM:6
(Runner Up: BT: 8, BD: 4, PD:4, OM:2)
1 BD (BT)
2 BT (PD)
3 PD (BT)
4 BD (BT)
5 BD (OM)
6 PD (BD)
7 OM (BT)
8 OM (as long as the pin is not on the front part; a deadly sin on a resort course if you ask me) (PD)
9 OM (PD)
10 PD (BT)
11 PD (BT)
12 BT (BD)
13 PD (OM)
14 BT (BD)
15 OM (BT)
16 OM (BD)
17 PD (BT)
18 OM (PD)

The funny thing is, this course would not be better than any of the courses at the resort, since a golf course for me needs a theme. For me therefore Old Mac is the course which more than others at the resort in quality outnumbers the sum of quality of its parts; the individual golf holes. (Where the opposite would apply to BT). This also perhaps explains why some people have more holes of course 'A' in their eclectic than of course 'B', while they actually might rate course B higher.

I have not played the new course, but based simply on which tee would I go to if given the choice, I came up with the following:

1.  BT
2.  PD
3.  PD
4.  PD
5.  BT
6.  BT
7.  BT
8.  BT
9. BT
10. BT
11.  PD
12.  PD
13   PD
14 PD
15 BD
16 BD
17 BT
18 PD

Totals

BD 2
PD 8
BT 8

1. pacific--I think trails is more fun, but there's nothing better than standing on the first tee at pacific dunes.
2. pacific
3. old mac, maybe trails.
4. trails.
5. bandon
6. pacific
7. pacific
8. old mac
9. pacific lower
10. bandon
11. pacific.
12. trails--for some reason i can't miss that green.
13. trails--great hole.  oh, i forgot about that one on pacific.
14. pacific--brutal.  trails 14 gets all the complaining but pacific probably beats it for x's on the scorecard.
15. trails
16. bandon--best looking hole on the property--then pacific, old mac, trails.
17. trails, pacific.
18. pacific, old mac.

When you have four of the best courses in the world, the weakest foursome is still pretty darn good. #7 to me has a great view, but wasn't one of my favorite holes at OM.  I was pretty far out of position off the tee, however, so I may get a better feel for the hole next time.

From the tips on each course.

1 - PD, OM, BT, BD
2 - PD, BT, OM, BD
3 - BT, PD, OM, BD
4 - BD, PD, BT, OM
5 - BD, BT, OM, PD
6 - PD, BT, OM, BD
7 - OM, BT, BD, PD
8 - OM, PD, BT, BD
9 - BT, BD, PD, OM
10 - PD, BD, OM, BT
11 - PD, OM, BT, BD
12 - OM, BD, PD, BT
13 - PD, BT, OM, BD
14 - BT, OM, PD, BD
15 - BD, BT, PD, OM
16 - BD, OM, PD, BT
17 - BT, OM, PD, BD
18 - OM, PD, BD, BT

No. 1s
PD - 6, BT - 4, BD - 4, OM - 4

No. 2s
PD - 4, BT - 6, BD - 3, OM - 5

No. 3s
PD - 6, BT - 4, BD - 2, OM - 6

No. 4s
PD - 2, BT - 4, BD - 9, OM -3

I have played BD 4 times, BT 3 times, PD 2 times and OM 1 time. I did this quickly without too much deep thinking and I think it accurately reflects what I think of each course (although OM could change with a couple of more plays). PD is clearly the superior course to me. Many all-world holes and hardly a bad one. BT I think is great and fairly consistent. OM is good but after one play it had fewer stand out moments. BD has some great highs but if you aren't on onee of the highs then it's kind of bland. It is definitely the course I would want to play least while I'm there but it is a good warm up course.

Fair enough, but I would say it's not weak at all. Sure 7 is one of the weaker holes on PD, but BD's is not bad as well with an exhilirating second shot. I hope it doesn't seem like I'm picking on you, just professing my love of the 7s!

7 weak at PD? Really?

Couldn't disagree more.
