Swinley Forest - 21st February 2011
« on: November 15, 2010, 04:34:36 AM »
Once again I am looking to organise another day at Swinley Forest for GCA members/society friends. We ran a similar day earlier this year and the thread for that can be found here;

http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,42247.0/

The date booked for this is Monday 21st February 2011 and the cost is £100.00 fully inclusive for the day (apologies as it represents an increase from 2010 rate, but still fine value for the day I feel)

I will be taking £50.00 deposits (so with a £50.00 balance payable before, or on the day itself) from now to secure places and have around 15-20 (approx) places for this day.

Please add your name to this thread if you 100% would like to play and are able to send over the required deposit beforehand.

Thanks  :)

Gareth

I might design my next trip to Europe around this.  I haven't been back to Swinley is 25 years.  What a great place!

Looks like there will be a US contingent Ron and Dan? Will you be making the trip over especially?  :)

Brian - Yes, this will be my first trip to the Surrey Sandbelt and first opportunity to play golf in England.  I'm ecstatic.

I would like to do this and can commit now. I'd plan a trip (from NY) to include this.

That's a great value.  Those that are going to see Swinley for the first time will be very glad that you did.

OT a bit but I heard something about the membership policy at Swinley Forest.  Is it true that if you sponsor someone for membership and they fail to be approved, that the sponsor also loses his membership?  Rumor or fact?

Steve - not sure if it still happens but that used to be standard practise at decent clubs. However unless the member was stupid the applicantion would be withdrawn before that happened.

Gareth,

How's the weather been lately in London?  Are the courses starting to open for play?

Hi Ron,

After the snow cleared just before Christmas the courses round here (Surrey/Berks sand belt) have open since the New year.

The courses I've seen and played (Sunningdale/Berkshire/West Hill) all seem to have recovered very well too - so I would expect Swinley Forest to be fully open too.

***Update***

We have a few places left for this day so if you would like to join us please send me a PM as we need deposits/payments now please.

As a reminder the outline of the day is as follows;

7.30am – Arrival with Coffee and Bacon Rolls

8.15am – First morning tee time (likely to be around 6 three balls for this day)

12.30pm (approx) – Full lunch in the clubhouse (need to change into Jacket/Shirt and Trousers, but tie is optional)

1.30pm onwards (approx) – Open use of the course (we will be likely the only players/users of the course this day)

4.30pm (approx) – Drinks and depart

Thanks for looking and hope more GCA members can join us on the day.

regards,
Gareth

We now have 23 players confirmed for the day at Swinley Forest so I have space for one more GCA member (to make 8 x 3 balls for the am round) if they fancy making this day.

Please let me know if you'd like to join us.

Thanks,
Gareth

I've done the AM draw this week and can confirm we are at 23 players for the day. So we'll have a two ball to kick off and then 7 three balls to follow on.

Would suggest that we all put a further £5 in the prize fund on the day (I have covered the costs of the prizes beforehand) for a full handicap stapleford competition in the morning. Ok with that guys?

Please aim to get to the club for around 7.30am as the first tee time is 8.15am. Weather looks so so for the time we tee off but improves to be a decent day from mid morning for most of the day (famous last words!!!)

If anyone has any questions at all you can reach me this weekend or Monday morning on the following number or email;

No that's been in the banks for a while...I'm hoping and praying that the sun peeks it's head out on Monday!

Would have been nice to see the sun yesterday but no joy on that front!! However the conditions last year were far worse for us....

Thanks Mark. Was better than last year but no sun!

Course was having quite a bit of work done (tree clearance/irrigation/new tee's) so didn't wasn't in the very best of condition compared to previous times I have played there. However it was, as ever, a very enjoyable day and I think everyone had a good time.

To be fair, the conditions were very nice - dead calm and when the mist cleared later in the day it was beautiful. I'm not usually a fan of playing 36 holes but that was some day and some lunch! Thanks for organising Gareth, I will post some photos in a few days.

I quite agree on the 36 holes in a day at this time of year....tends to be too much really. However the course was looking good (as always) if not quite as conditioned as it is normally. But that didn't detract from playing what is always a really fun course and good day out.

Look forward to the pictures Brian!
