4-Club Tournament - which clubs would you pick?
« on: October 30, 2010, 05:29:19 PM »
We had a 4 Club tournament today, 2-man teams best ball.  Each player picked 4 clubs and could not use your partner clubs.

There were a lot of different combinations, I went with the following:

3-Wood
6 iron
58 Degree Lob Wedge
Putter

Some people did not choose a putter  ???

Which clubs would you bring?

Played 9 holes in Ballyneal with 4 clubs. I went no driver, no putter.

3-wood
5-iron
8-iron
pw

I made one of the most memorable pars of my life on #2. 3w / 8-iron / 3w / 3w I'm sure the other 2 in my group will chime in with their choices later

I think it depends on the course to some degree but I would choose my 17 degree hybrid, a 5 iron, an 8 iron and a 54 degree wedge. I can putt pretty well by just blading the wedge. I would guess that is why some of the folks in your event keep the putter out, you can just blade the wedge just as well.

19 degree hybrid
5 iron
9 iron
Sand Wedge 56 degrees for putting, good chipping club

Played once in a 4 club two person team and you could use your partners clubs too.

Paul,

Interesting that they didn't fare well. I wonder if there was a similarity amongst them in games or if the course demands more precision in putting etc. Very interesting though.

Just curious, what was the low gross score and what is the course rating?

Course Rating from Back Tees: 73.5.
1 under 71 Gross won the tournament from the Back Tees.

The greens are difficult and were in perfect shape.

The person in my group that did not use a putter struggled on long putts.

They did a great job on setting up the course:

Longest par 4 played all the way back
Shortest Par 4 everyone played up
Shortest Par 5 everyone played up
The Par 3s all played a different length

I'm one that thinks the putter is absolutlely the most important club you could choose when you have as many as four clubs. As I've mentioned before (sorry Adam), the last time I tried this I shot even par for nine holes (7 hcp give or take) and used

3 wood
7 iron
Sand Wedge
Putter

These might change a bit on a longer course, but I can hit the three wood 250 and the 7-iron 170 so I can at least be in position on most holes with those two clubs. In that good round, I made some putts from outside five feet, which gets pretty tough when you're blading a wedge.

The key to these tournaments is getting it in the fairway off the tee and then having the 2 clubs you use the most to get up and down.  I do think this type of tournament favors the players with a better short game.

Depends a little on the length of the course I think, but at my home club (6767)

3 wood
7 Iron
52
Putter

I don't understand not selecting a putter.  Half the game is putting, without one, you are guaranteed to have the wrong club more than 50% of the time.  I am shocked that so many GCA'ers could think the putter is so easily replaced by the blade of a wedge...

Paul,

Thanks.  That is a great score!!!  Sounds like a terrific setup. It is very true, on the longer putts it is much more difficult with the wedge. A lot of good comments about the putter. I am a low single digit but a fairly poor putter so that is probably what influences my preference. I have done a 1 club and a 3 club but never a 4 club. Thanks, very interesting.

3wood, 4iron, 7iron, pitching wedge.

I can hit my 3wood about 230 and the pitching wedge is pretty versatile around the greens. the other two clubs are clubs I just use a lot around my home course and feel comfortable with.

I putt a lot with my wedge, and would usually plan on leaving out the putter in favor of another club.  But the lag putting problem is very real.  From a foot out to about six or eight feet, I can really putt with my wedge. In fact I have set up my putters with the length and lie of a wedge--35" and 62*.

I have tried putting the longer ones with a hybrid or driver, but I'm not so good with them

My brother once played in a two-man scramble where each guy got three clubs and you couldn't share.  He took a driver, seven iron and L wedge (it was a Pete Dye course), and managed to go make two birdies and an eagle in a three-hole stretch without his partner contributing.

Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

 ??? :P ;D ;)

If you putt enough with the driver or sand wedge you can pretty much hang in there with most players when on the green Having broken a few putters in a dark periiod I found that it's not indispensible to play ok ..  Many others might feel likewise and thus chhose not to bring the putter

2,6,pw,p  besides the putter, you could change each club by 1 in either direction 1 time.

2 hybrid, 6 iron, sw and putter.

FWIW, I carry an old, beat-up 6 iron on my cart at work and have played many a hole against the members using only the 6 iron.  Have made many a par even from the back tees so I am not afraid to go putterless but if given 4 clubs I would take my putter.

might substitute the 3w for the hybrid depending on conditions.

I hit the ball high and have a pretty decent shortgame so I'd go with:

Driver
3-iron
9-iron
60 degree

I would putt with my 3 iron here, I've played one-club tournaments before with just a 5 or 6 iron and putted very well.
