Aerial of the Day #34 - 28 Feb 2002
« on: February 28, 2002, 05:47:13 AM »
Only comment today is that this is the first aerial (that I've noticed) that you can see players on the course, or at least carts:

No idea but the preponderence of straight-away holes and lack of doglegs suggests this is a HARD golf course with not many strategic options.

Looks like something Shivas would favor.  Will he start a new streak with this one?

Off to meetings - need some clues.

chipoat;

You would be wrong about the lack of strategic options, although pruning back some trees would help, so I can see where you might be coming from.  I also believe you may have played there. ;)

Incidentally, this course is working on putting together a fabulous restoration plan.

I've seen early aerials of this course. The restoration should be something to celebrate. From what I remember, pruning the trees won't come close to restoring the course. Early on, there WERE no trees to speak of.

SPDB,

Very perceptive!  ;D

As I understand it, this hole was restored a few years ago to it's original form, although others probaby know the story better than I do.

Is this course as flat as it looks?

Wow!
I just made a guess, looked on mapquest to confirm, and lo and behold, the course I was looking for was RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the course featured in this thread.

Sean,
If I hadn't cut out the corner in the upper left part of the picture by the tennis courts, you'd see part of the neighboring course.

Guest a.k.a. golf's most beloved figure (you need to hide your e-mail address),
The course is not flat.  It is not Augusta hilly, but it has elevation change.

Clue time.

Same big clue as yesterday, look who knows the course and where they reside.

You don't have to be a little girl from old time comics to enjoy this course.

I just got your clue, Andy.  I was picturing a parade...

GOT IT.

I believed I had it with Cirba's post. BillV's was the clincher.

I'd call this course a DOOZIE.

I was going to help with Doozy as 1pm approached, but...

In Hawaii, they say cowabunga, here at this course at least one guy says Bungaraya!

Also, the 4th hole is 105 yds, uphill.

Scott asked me to post this 1924 view of todays aerial of the day.  What a difference a few trees make. Many with a nice book collection will recognize this photo.

Enjoy

Geoff

As we are 1 minute from 1pm

The most trees are near that uphill par 3 I was talking about, in the upper left quadrant of the photo.

Actually, this is a photo after Tommy Naccarato went in there last night, since he has such a Ross for the place!

But the spot he so loves is behind more trees in this second photo.

Lots of clues now.

Also note that the clubhouse is on the other side of the street, now.

Note that the crossbunkers on the par 5 17th (far left) are now gone and the peninsula green has been changed.  I think the current restoration will bring all of that back.

Crossbunkers on par 4 5th (one looks like a fish) in the right side of photo are gone.

Bunkers left of 2nd fairway (bottom right) are gone.

Bill,
#4 has the ravine in front of green, famous for The Emperor's up-and-down from there.

Little Latin Lupty Lu, I would have never gotten this without the great clues.  But, I was even more amazed when I went to mapquest like Sean and pulled out 2 more clicks to count 3 more 18 holes and 2 more 9 hole courses in the immediate neighborhood.  Can you tell us the names ofsome of the other ones?

No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Manufacturer's, North Hills, Flourtown, Sandy Hills are all very near and Whitemarsh and Phila Cricket are near.

Philly is pretty densely packed. Also, with LuLu, note how you cross 3 fairways to reach the practice range (middle left, now photo).  Anyone know of anythiing like that?

Flynn's Manufacturers G&CC is across the street top left.

EDIT: The answer, in Bill's post above, is Lu Lu (2 words).  Formerly known as Lu Lu Temple, due to the affiliation with the Masonic order.  The Temple was dropped in the early 70's when the requirement of being a Shriner was dropped.

All information and the 1924 photo provided by GCAer Steve Sayers (SriBungaRaya, has to do with his wife and his home), who is a member there and has spearheaded the restoration efforts there.

BillV - The answer to your question is contained in your posting:

Philly Cricket! It has LuLu beat. You have to cross 4 holes to get to the range.

As seen in the Pine Valley aerial in the other thread, you'd have to walk across a bunch of holes to get to the range, but I doubt anybody ever does it.

Steve,
If you check in again, feel free to add more comments on how the restoration is going.  He told me 65 trees have been taken down so far this winter, and it shows how many more need to go.
