Courses that "think" - DeWitt Weaver Design
« on: February 28, 2002, 02:34:31 PM »
??? From Golf Course News International - some interesting?? quotes from him in this article. Can anyone make sense from them please, as I can't!

"Tour Veteran DeWitt Weaver turns to Design:
"I believe a golf course should think for the player," Weaver said. "A player should be able to picture shots with his or her imagination and not get caught up in guessing what the hole does or where the hole goes. I want golfers of all abilities to look at the holes I design and think, "I have to play that hole"

Hopefully, no, I'll never have to play that hole!! What tripe! But wait, there's more!

"I am a true believer that spectacular golf holes allow you to picture and ultimately hit spectacular golf shots."

Wow, is that all there is to design?

And to cap it all Nicklaus Design will be providing all his technical expertise. Watch out he could be coming to an area near you!

Neil,
"I am a true believer that spectacular golf holes allow you to picture and ultimately hit spectacular golf shots."

There is a lot of truth in this quote. I notice this happening on the occasions when I'm playing with a golfer who is "stepping up" to a more challenging course. This happened most recently in Florida when I took some guys to better courses than they normally played. To a man they came away having played their best rounds in a while and were noticeably more animated about the experience. Some of the post round remarks were: "I really had to focus on that shot", "I worked a ball from right to left, I never do that", I hit the highest 4 iron I ever hit, but I had to if I was going to stay on that green", and so forth. Playing spectacular holes does have a certain positive influence on most players, if they let it happen for them.
