Trump to Buy Engineers?
« on: September 15, 2010, 10:31:31 AM »
According to the NY Post today, Engineers has "been presented with a unique opportunity to consider converting to a Trump branded country club".

I believe this is the first highly acclaimed classic course and a favorite of many GCA members (myself included) that Trump has got involved with.

For the most part I have shied away from Trump courses just becuase I really do not like the whole "Donald" brand, of -

"This is the best, lets build waterfalls etc. etc.

But Engineers is a course I would always want to play.  The course doesnt really need many architectual changes, but the conditioning, which is not that great relative to the architectual merit, would likely improve significantly.

Curious to see how this will play out.  All things considered you would have to expect a large % of the membership to head for the doors if Engineers becomes Trump Engineers.

The rumor in the neighborhood is that this is a done deal.

However, everyone seems to be discounting the possibility that Mr. Trump will not see the architecture of the course to his liking and will make major changes to it.

Trump sure has been buying up a lot of BK golf courses over the last couple years. I wonder if he really thinks he can make money running these courses as the second owner or if this is all just a long term real estate play...

Give Trump a break.  Bedminster looked really good on TV.  It looked like a course that most of us would love.

It is true that Trump has made an offer on Engineers.  However, this is very far from being a done deal.  Unlike Briar Hall, which was close to succumbing from unbearable debt, and the NJ clubs which all involved Bank foreclosure issues; Engineers is far from being dead in the water.  This summer has been a disaster with 6 greens wiped out by anthracnose and the rest severely damaged to the point where recently aerified greens putted better.  In addition, the fairways were devestated by heat stress and are a good 30% lost.   And adding insult to injurt the 25 yeaar old irrigation system suffered many major and minor leaks and other issues--there is a desperate need for an up to date system.  This being said, there is a membership meeting concerning the offer in a couple of weeks--nothing concrete has happened other than an offer.  He has expressed a big interest in having a Long Island presence and really thought highly of the course when he walked throughout the property.  Supposedly, he has also expressed interest in some other Long Island clubs including some near the Hamptons.  Also, there are members of Engineers who possess the wealth to top a Trump offer for no other reason than to maintain their games with friends of much lesser wealth.  Also, Trump may find it harder to do anything in this town than any other in metro-NY--cutting trees down is an unbelievably difficult proceedure, let alone doing any sort of building.

Having once been a member (and member of the board) of HFGC, and having had discussions with it's owners over a potential purchase, It's unlikely Trump makes any kind of foolish play for the club. Instead it is considerably more likely Trump waits for HFGC to reach a critical mass of disaffection with the owners and their management, and the inevitable disintegration of it's membership fabric.

Say what you want about the Donald, but he's neither stupid nor insane about buying his courses for the right price. In today's era of increasingly distressed golf assets, I dare others here to find another buyer who has assembled such a decent collection over the last 5 years. I know I, for one, would prefer to have him own my club over the Townsend family.

Now, that's funny (in a good way!).  Nice!

According to the NY Post today, Engineers has "been presented with a unique opportunity to consider converting to a Trump branded country club".

Unless the club is in dire financial straits, I can't see DT making an offer commensurate with the value of the club/land

I believe this is the first highly acclaimed classic course and a favorite of many GCA members (myself included) that Trump has got involved with.

Not true.
He attempted to buy Hidden Creek some time ago.

For the most part I have shied away from Trump courses just becuase I really do not like the whole "Donald" brand, of -
Say what you will, he runs a quality operation.

But Engineers is a course I would always want to play.  The course doesnt really need many architectual changes, but the conditioning, which is not that great relative to the architectual merit, would likely improve significantly.

Do you really think DT would buy the golf course and leave it intact, architecturally  ?

I disagree.
If the members own Engineers, which I suspect they do, If they approve the sale, it's reasonable to think that they would remain as members.

That didn't happen at The Addington, the shareholder members sold out to a UK mini Trump and a high percentage disappeared.

Just played the Trump National (old Lowes Island) outside of DC and with the exception of the atrocious civil war works waterfall behind the 18th green, the course is VERY nice.  Trump/Fazio opened up views of the Potomac that are eye-opening.  One could argue that this is the best course in DC area....

[/quote]Addington isn't Roslyn Heights, Long Island.

And a UK mini Trump ain't Donald Trump

He produces a quality product

If they sell, they'll stay.

UNless a nearby club in distress holds a fire sale for membership

Jonathan-
You're not referring to the River course, I assume, which is atrocious. The other one was closed in June when I was there -- I take it that it's opened back up?
