What settles you down into a round?

The thread on the fiercest bunkers got me thinking what settled me down just about always into a round? By settling down I pretty much mean what takes the nerves down and calms you down into a round? I guess this might be a question for the contingent on here who has some pretty good familiarity and experience with tournament golf, but maybe even that doesn't matter.

Ironically, the thing that always settled me down into a round and took any nerviousness off was missing a shot. As soon as I missed a shot I was just fine, calm and could pretty much just flow from then on.

Pretty weird I guess but you pretty much have to go with what you have to go with, I guess! ;)

What settles you down into a round? Maybe some never do, and if so tell me about that too and why.  :-\

The others in the group playing well helps.  

I think watching others make putts specifically has in the past allowed me to hone in and do the same.

The more I think about it, the more I believe the thing that calms me down is just getting to the first green. Hitting the first tee shot, first approach and first few putts.

Perhaps it's overcoming that bad shot you mention.

Two things in separate situations calm me down.

#1 - Making a putt very early in the round (first three holes or so) outside of 5 feet.  For some reason it's more settling when its for par.  I think it makes me feel that I can save par even if my chipping isn't deft.

#2 - After a bad hole or string of bad holes, hitting a good tee shot.  For some reason this usually ends up being a left-to-right tee shot.

I agree - making a chip and putt par early... makes me feel I have got out of jail.

A short par 5 with a wide fairway and a flat green :)

Anytime I make a 20ft+ on the first hole I feel like I'm on my way...

I think for many including a few of the tour players....weed does a good job....I know it helps the college players...

I really come into my own around the 11th hole: I start playing my best golf of the day, firing at pins and sinking putts.  By around the 13th hole I usually lose it completely.

The imaginary applause I get as I approach the first Tee, until I realise it’s my teeth rattling as is too bloody early to play a round with the frost still on the ground. But some of my friend love the early spring starts, I certainly do not miss that these days.

Being serious, it’s my frame of mind, my mood as we walk to the 1st Tee, it set it all in motion yet when the club face makes contact with the ball I can tell if I will have a happy day (or not). So the feeling of contentment must be the order of the day.

Agreed.  Nothing like an early "tester" to get you going and for some reason the par putt seems more important than the birdie--I know it shouldn't but it does.

2 pars or better in the first 3 holes, a good cigar also always calms me down and gets me concentrated --- better --- both....

Two things

1)  Not 3 putting the first hole and

2)  Not making birdie on the first hole

For some reason when I birdie the first I am usually in for a long day.  On a related topic, does anyone know any really good sports psychologists... ;)

Once I hit one down the middle off the tee, I feel like my round settles down from that point on.  Its starts to wear on you if you cannot hit a fairway because you are constantly fighting for pars.

Tell you what did the opposite to me - I holed out my second shot on the first hole for eagle - the rest of the round I am saying to myself - you idiot, everyone is going to ask you what you shot for the round so I was under pressure the rest of the day.  At least if you ace the 17th hole you can say it was pure luck when they ask what you shot because you were 15 over going into 17.

On a normal day I settle down after I hit a good drive and a green in regulation.
