Gleneagles SF new greens
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:54:23 PM »
Here is a link to a great article about the new greens at Gleneagles.  Kudos to Thomas Bastis ans the others involved with helping out the cash strapped classic 9 hole course.  Can't wait to go play there again when it reopens.

I'm playing there with Tom Hsieh at the end of October...looking forward to it.  I'll post a report.

Played there a number of times in the 1980s.  Always enjoyed the course.  My memory is that the greens then did not have much in the way of contours or slopes to them.

Interesting to read the legend about Trevino.  Can anyone confirm or refute?

Jim, that story is as old as the hills...there is no evidence of it on hand at the course (pictures or scorecard), so I don't think you'll find any evidence that would verify it.  Doesn't mean that it never happened, of course.

If you're on their mailing list, they've been good about sending out updates. They've been looking for volunteers to assist with the final raking and shoveling. This was their last update:

Dear Gleneagles GC Golfer,

The major portion of the renovation is now complete!  Leading up to Opening Day on Oct. 2nd, we will be nursing these greens and the surrounds with hand watering, up to three times per day to ensure a proper grow in.  Wet your appetite by taking a gander at the gorgeous photos of our brand new greens below.

Call for Volunteers:
This Saturday, 12 p.m.
Weekdays from 3 - 6 p.m.
We still need volunteers to help get us ready for Opening Day!  All volunteers who work at least four hours will be invited for a pre-opening round and ceremony.  If you can operate a rake or a shovel, sign up at the clubhouse and we'll tell you how you can help.

Scotch and Walk, Sept. 17
Friday, September 17th, 5 p.m.
Meet the project leaders, enjoy our fine spirits, and take a walking tour of Old Number One and selected greens.

Opening Weekend Tee Time Reservations:
Saturday - Sunday, Oct. 2-3
We will be accepting Opening Weekend tee time reservations two weeks in advance, starting at 7:30am on Saturday, Sept. 18. Tee time reservations can be made for anytime on Oct. 2nd or 3rd.  We will only accept reservations for 18 hole foursomes, threesomes and twosomes.  Due to expected demand on this special weekend, we cannot guarantee a tee time for walk-ups.

They also sent out a few "after" pictures, which I'll post below:

Kevin, I remember hearing that Tom Watson, when he was at Stanford, had lots of trouble scoring at Lincoln Park.  And now the Trevino story.  Don't know if either is true.  But funny to think that two SF muni's under 6000 yards could have befuddled two of golf's greatest players ever.

Was/is the course record at Gleneagles really 69?  I would have thought low 60s.

Your thought is correct...the course record is 64.

Kudos and a big thank you to Thomas Bastis, the Cal Club crew and all the others who have helped Tom Hsieh with this project at Gleneagles.  I was not aware the situation there had gotten so dire.

I first played Gleneagles well over 30 years ago. I remember that the fairways then were so densely overgrown with little white flowers that the starter's shack sold orange golf balls to play with. If you used a white ball, you would have trouble finding it among the flowers, even in the middle of the fairway. This was years before Wilson Staff & Jerry Pate introduced the orange golf ball to the mass market.
