I am trying to get ideas for new tee markers.  I need something nice without a logo so they will not turn into tee gifts.  This got me thinking what course has the best tee markers in the US.  Functionality and looks.  Thanks in advance.

Yeamans Hall's are cool (Cut up Railroad) but the Dunes Club does it the right way...no markers at all!

Come to think of it I can't remember that many tee markers from the different courses I've played.

But seriously, they need to be visible from all angles.

Some courses these days have pieces of wood (like tree limbs) and the cut/exposed ends are painted.  The trouble is sometimes it's hard to tell from the sides which color they're painted.

Tobacco Road has little tobacco farming implements for their five sets of tees.  You have to pay attention to be sure you keep playing the right plow!

Is there something emblematic of your part of Texas there, Carter?  Little oil derricks?

It's amazing how many of those I've seen at various courses.  My home club uses the first one listed.

Actually, my favorites are at Merion.  They're mini versions of the wicker baskets (solid, of course).

The worst by far are the sheet metal cutouts of some fancy script of the club's initial.

Perhaps like the Good Old Days we should reinstate the old tradition of putting the heads of traitors on spikes which could act as some interesting Tee Markers. Well certainly if they are those of our Governing Bodies



It just might remind others that the Game is worthy of saving from the hand full of long hitters that have effectively make parts of our great courses like the Valley of Sin redundant.  Or is that just a might too far or perhaps not enough.

When we run out of Governing Members we could start on those using the cheater line balls or distance aids – oh well it was just a thought.

Most tee markers are terrible, espcially all the gimicky ones like at Tobacco Road or wooden logs etc.

The best ones I know of are for some reason slowly disappearing.  One side of the tee is a short rubbish bin which has shelves to hold a few sets of clubs and a plate describing the hole number, yardage and si.  The other side of the tee area is a disc.  When I fist started visiting Scotland this style was all over the place.  Below is sort of what I am talking about sans the shelves or arms to hold clubs.

Sandpiper (Goleta, CA) deployed large industrial drill bits from what I assumed was from the nearby oil drilling industry. Oil rigs are visible off the coast and the surrounding area has remnants of oil drilling. I do recall that Sandpiper's developer, Kenneth Hunter, was in the oil business so perhaps that is the origin of the unique tee markers.

They were not aesthetically pleasing to me but they never wore out and I guess were difficult to steal due to their weight. It usually took at least a few holes for course newcomers to correctly guess the tee markers origins.

The Everglades Club in Palm Beach has metal alligators that are always looking down the fairway. Very simple yet club specific.

Carter, my thoughts:

1)  you want something so ugly that no one wants to take one home, but...

2)  you want something visible, memorable, but ugly and...

3)  you have to know that if the course is any good, people will grab a marker or two, so ...


go with the best-looking, most memorable, most characteristic design you can imagine, then SUPERSIZE THEM!!!!!

I always like to see something that is one solid color. Plain old balls, discs, or wooden block cubes.

I'm not a fan of the painted logs.... I guess because Augusta has them (although those don't appear to be painted), that everyone else has to have them too. It's a cliche. And from a practicality standpoint I don't like them because you can't see the color from most angles.

Clever ones tied to the club name, like the mini-capitol buildings at Congressional are cool. Kingsmill used to have water wheels.

I also like the bottles at Oakmont.

The muni I grew up playing had tee markers made of concrete molded from plastic drinking cups which were then spray painted. Despite the primitive manufacturing method, I actually thought they were very functional. They made great poison blocks too.

I also enjoy it when a tour event has a tee marker as an homage to the event's location or sponsor. The little tractors at the John Deere are cute. The best was the Kapalua tournament when they used pineapples.... do they still do that?

Ronald you understand what I am looking for!!  Something knowone wants yet functional and looks good.  This may be harder than I thought!
