"In some seriousness, I will say that the difference in lineups is that there is a gigantic dropoff from Manning to whoever his backup is (similar to Ben to Leftwich Dixon). Anyone who sees a tremendous dropoff from one to another in this format is seeing things I don't see."
George:
This proves my point! The ease in which coaches make out line-ups in football makes such decisions a minor part of their responsibilities. Yes, they have other major responsibilities, although every play they call ends up in the hands of the players they choose to put out there -- in football, a relatively easy decision.
In RCup, who'd you put out first -- Tiger, the alleged #1 player in the world, or Kuchar, who's playing as consistently well as anyone in golf these days? Tiger has lots of RCup experience, much of it bad. Kuchar -- none. Are you suggesting that's a decision as easy to make as whether to put out Manning or his backup? It's much harder....
The decision to put out Manning is one of the few non-decisions a head coach has. Planning out schemes to attack ever changing defenses is approx. 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times more difficult than coaching Tiger on how to attack a golf course, and that isn't even all the head coach in football does (that number is a rough approximation, feel free to add or drop a zero or two if necessary
). Heck, dealing with injuries and idiot players who get themselves suspended alone is more difficult than anything Pavin and Monty combined will do.
The very fact that the draws are blind in the Ryder Cup is tacit admission that match ups in golf are very very very close and almost don't matter. You roll 'em out there and see what happens. If the players win, you're a genius, if they don't, you're an idiot.
I will say, the fact that Pavin has turned over some of the silly decisions to his wife is a plus to me, though I will also say I or anyone else could make the clothing decisions in approx. 90 seconds (figure 30 seconds a day). Frankly, I can't even believe the PGA doesn't just take care of the logistical details.
