Both nines finishing on threes
« on: September 05, 2010, 08:02:13 PM »
Okay, I'm new here so first of all hello all.... its a great group and the discussion is amazing.

Both the front nine and back nine at my course finish with par 3's.  I have long wondered about any other classic era (or modern for that matter) courses finishing the same way.  Mine is a 1920 Tilly.  I know of many great courses with finishing 3's but I have never heard of another that both nines finish with a three.  They must be out there.....  any come to mind?

Hi Brian! Good to have you here. I'm still peeling dead skin from where I sunburned my bald scalp last week. Stop posting and go cut down some more trees.

For those that don't know, Brian is the superintendent at a wonderful Tilly club.

Welcome, Brian.

Oak Hills CC in San Antonio is a 1922 AWT; #s 9 and 18 are parallel par threes.

Cape Fear National just south of Wilmington NC has both nines end with par threes.  A brand new course designed by Tim Cate.  I have not played it so I can't say it is great or not.

Brian - I've wondered the same thing for a while.
I can also attest to Phil's comments.
Brian has kept our golf course in great shape, firm and fast during an incredibly difficult and hot summer in NY

Kingsville Golf & CC, Kingsville, ON.  The original Blue and White nines finish on par 3's.

They added another nine holes (Gold) about 20 years ago, which finishes with a par 5.

An "l" went missing along the way as well ?

Royal St. David's also finishes with two P3's on each nine.

Ross's routing at Camden had both #9 (current #6) and #18 (current #12) as par threes.  I'd also argue that they are both strong finishing holes for each nine.

Preston Country Club in Kingwood WV has this arrangement.   The 9th is a strongish hole because there is so much back to front slope to the green.  The white tees have it as about 150 but there is a back tee which stretched it to over 200 through a narrow chute.  The 18th is also 200 but plays downhill to a green that while shallow is very receptive.  A weak hole for the better player.
Some days you play golf, some days you find things.

Here is a course that has been under the radar for many years. It is located in Rockland County, NY

The course Brian Chapin is referring to was originally called Mountain View Farm and was the private estate course of one, Adolf Zukor, founder and president of Paramount Pictures, a course built by A W Tillinghast (1919-1920). Zukor went broke during the depression.

In all, I think he, at one time, owned about 800 acres - some of which is a now a county (?) Park.

He lost control of Paramount and his property and the course was sold and became Dell G & CC and later Dellwood CC.

Stay tuned

If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

Dave,

Good call with Brora! Since I saw this thread I've been trying to think of courses with no luck, so I can't believe I missed such an old favourite!

Cheers,

James

Brora was a great call for sure.  I think we forget it because it's out and back.  We don't think of the front nine as "finishing" on anything.  It just transitions into the back nine.

Midvale, RTJ's first solo layout in Rochester, has par threes on 9 and 18.  Both are steeply uphill.

Brook Lea is an underrated Ross course near Rochester that has both nines finishing on threes.  I think both of those par threes are phenomenal holes as well.

How about courses where both nines START with par threes?  I can think of one great course where there is the case, Oxfordshire's own HUNTERCOMBE.

George,

If AWT had 800 acres to work with, why do you suppose he chose to end both nines with a par 3 ?

Or, was the routing or order of play changed at any time such that the two par 3's became the finishing holes ?

I always liked Dellwood, although some of the newer or revised holes seemed out of character.

Is the opening hole one of the unique holes in golf ?
How about # 7, one of the few holes in golf with a stoplight on the tee ?

Does # 1 remind you a little of # 8 on the east end ?   ;D

Or, was the routing or order of play changed at any time such that the two par 3's became the finishing holes ?   What’s there is the original rouing

I always liked Dellwood, although some of the newer or revised holes seemed out of character. .... I never heard of it until recently

Is the opening hole one of the unique holes in golf ? .......  High blind second shot

How about # 7, one of the few holes in golf with a stoplight on the tee ? - that may be changed, Pat
