Aerial of the Day #41 (and 42) - 8 Mar 2002

For some reason, I couldn't get on here this morning.  Then I just shut down the browser, came back in and it was fine.  Oh, well.

Today's pair will be a little different.  It's still 2 pics and 2 courses, but it's not what you think.  The first pic will have 2 courses and the second will have none.  The third one had roast beef....

The first pic has a two-course club, where it wouldn't surprise me if the co-founders were Hermes and Mercury.  Also, I didn't want to go through the trouble of figuring out which course is which by comparing the aerial with the scorecard, so I just figured I'll show both at once, and maybe my mollydooker assistant can label the holes later, if he's available:


And the second one is also a little different, to get your thinking caps on.  This aerial is of the land before a certain modern course was built.  Can you figure out which course was built on this property?

I identified the first one by the first 2 holes that loaded on my slow as a snail dial up.

What is the scale for the second one?

The scale on the second one is that the entire course would fit in the picture within maybe an inch of each border.  The course does not take up a terribly large amount of land.

Wow - that house is pretty close to the short par 3 that plays away from the clubhouse. I wonder if any tee shots ever land in their living room ?

the 3rd hole on one of the two course is cut off. but who's perfect, well captured.

A little wider capture to the northwest and you could have had 3 courses, all of which are pretty special.

    No, I know two of the clubs you're probably referring to.  This has hosted a past PGA, though.

     @#&!  I originally had that "lost" hole and it got lost in the melding process.  I do it late at night, so these things happen.  :-/

Damn, I couldn't have gotten it even with the oats reference (which makes sense now anyway).  The rainbow gives it away.  The thing about hitting into a bedroom SHOULD HAVE, but my thinking cap is at home.

The Hermes and Mercury references were basically dead giveaways, if you know who they are.  If not, a little web search would help.  They were the Greek and Roman gods who had winged feet (among other things).  Hence Tillinghast's Winged Foot.  I'll make an educated guess the the West course is on the left side. ;D  Home of numerous Big Tournaments, including '97 PGA with the rainbow reference above Davis Love's head.  Also the '94 Open with the 18 hole playoff between Zoeller and Norman (wave the white flag Fuzzy, on last hole of regulation).  Also had '74 Open, with the tough course setup where Hale Irwin's winning score was +7.

The famous neighbor in the upper left corner (cut out on purpose) is Quaker Ridge, also by Tillinghast.  Hence the oatmeal reference.

A quick clue about the second photo.  The white stuff in the middle and upper left is sand.  It is a sandy location.  The pond in middle left comes into play on a par 3.  The clubhouse is about where the apex of the teardrop road in the middle.  Think David Lee Roth song (remake).  At this point, if you have a guess, go ahead and spit it out.

Scott:  Jeez, I am REALLY stupid today, I just blew right by Hermes and Mercury.  Damn right those should have been a giveaway... and to think, just yesterday I was wearing a logo shirt from this club!  My mind works in inscrutable ways.  (Hopefully Dan Kelly will see that).

Here is the routing of the west course.  No time for the east right now. Maybe later Note teh lack of an extensive practice facility. #3 is where Casper layed up on all 4 days in 1959 yet made his par 3 each time.  Left or right is bad.

The second is Mike Strantz' Tobacco Road.  That was the Daivd Lee Roth remake reference (YAPCR!).  The pond is in use on the par 3 14th, with the green of 13 ESE near the road.  In view beyond 13 green is industrial building across street.  Open areas SE of teardrop are holes 12 and first half of 13, I believe.  Sandy area along road NE is 15, I think.

Wow Brian C, that was an amazing call!  Are you a Tar Heel?  Do you or had you worked on or at TR?  I had a chance to play with selcom seen Del, KC, and Tony Stewart drifting in and out on his cushman, the December before it opened, in late stage of grow-in.  I wouldn't have recognised that aerial pre-construction in a million years.  Welcome to the tree house.

PS: Scott, the only David Lee Roth remake I know is his re-do of the great Louis Prima song.  I couldn't think of any Gigalo Hills, Links, Oaks, Experience at (in golf), or anything like that.  8)

Did they get it wrong?

I'm gonna have to go home and watch that tape. They probably said it every time they showed No. 10.

No, no TarHeel here. I haven't even played the course (except a computer rendition). But i've seen an overhead of the actual course, and the road in the lower-left corner looked eeriley similar, then I saw the pond that occupies the 14th, and my first thought was TR. It was a lucky guess in a way  ;).

No it was definitely #3.  In those days 227 was a pretty long par 3.  Upped and downed it out of the front L bunker for par the first time I played it.  NEVER since (But 1 birdie  :-* ) . The hole is a mother.

The redanman is quite right. You might recognize the 10th by Ben Hogan's description (and still one of the best):

"A 3 Iron into some guy's bedroom" an obvious reference to the house that sits directly behind the hole. Along with SFGC's "Duel Hole" it goes down as one of Tillie's best, maybe the best. The green is absolutely diabolical.

Casper's intention in laying up at the 3 was that he didn't ever want to risk being above the hole.

There was a quote from an unfortunate soul who missed the cut in 74 (the name escapes me), to the effect of:

"Did you have any uphill puts?"
"a lot of 'em, after every downhill putt"

The East course starts south of the clubhouse and works its way around the eastern perimeter of the property, before working its way through the west course on the backside.
The east course actually enjoys better land than the west, with much better natural features (notice the lake the 4th plays around (with water tower)). The par 3 third is cut out on the right side, along with the tip tees for the 4th.

Bryan, With such luck, be careful that JakaB doesn't recruit you to go to the casino with him! :o  I see the cabin on the pond now that you mention it.   Lots of history in that old place.  Stranz lived in the cabin while he took residence design/building the course.  The real history goes back to the patriarch of the family who ran the paving company and was once Mayor of the town.  Allegedly there were some pretty wild parties there during prohibition. :-X

One more thing.  You have to remember that it was Venturi and CBS.  No wonder you were confused!

Massacre at Winged Foot by Dick Schapp, is a good history of the Irwin Open after Casper's, but it refers to Casper and replicates this data.

Don't ever believe CBS.
