Last minute twilight near Heathrow as a single
« on: August 10, 2010, 12:06:33 PM »
My flight arrives at 12:40 on a Tuesday.  It gets dark at 7:15.  I am staying across the street from Heathrow that night and picking Mayhugh and a rental car up in the morning.  Past experience tells me I will be eager to stretch out on a golf course that evening mainly to keep myself awake.  Primary considerations are - proximity and flexibility to cancel if the flight is late or I just would rather sleep.  Secondary consideration is price.  Quality of course is a distant consideration.  Stockley Park and Fullwell look like the leading candidates.

What advice do you have?

Royal Mid Surrey.

A 10 - 15 minute cab ride, not sure of the price.

RMS is bloody expensive as a visitor for the quality of the course. Cool to see Taylor's alpinisation, but I wouldn't recommend paying what they charge when the Woking neighbourhood is a similar distance and has much better golf for far less.

Malden Golf Club is quite fun and shouldn't be too expensive, if you don't see it as being too far from Heathrow.

Go with Scott's advice, he lives in the area and I do not.

Jason you're on the money.

Stockley would be my banker.  It's an RTJ on landfill and even when I first fell into the "only old dead guys made interesting courses" groupthink, I always really liked it. Apart from crossing a road it’s a good walk with plenty of variety and interest. A solid Doak 5 I would hazard. Mark Rowlinson is the only other person on here who's played it, (are you still la member Richard?) and he's said nice things too.  I would welcome your opinion as its hard for me to place it, the only other RTJ I've played was the original Celtic Manor.  Just check whether they have a society booking and if not they’ll just take your money when you turn up.  It will have the smallest green fee. Check, there might even be a complimentary bus from Heathrow to the Business Park adjacent to the course.

Fulwell was my dad’s course and I've caddied/played it a good no of times.  Not quite heathland and not quite parkland, it's too flat for my liking and IMO more proof that Morrison was the least talented member of that firm.  Still I'm a bit hard on it and you'll enjoy playing it. A Doak 4?  If you're keen I might be able to fix you up with a member.

Royal Mid Surrey, the most interesting history and again probably a Doak 4 but it will cost more in taxi and in green fee. I once posted on here about playing it and an architect member IM’d me saying he had to remain anonymous but there were 50 better courses to spend money on round London.

Another possibility is Stoke Park, but it's very expensive and has been changed over the years, but it does have a good pedigree.

See you at Buda.

Thanks for the advice everyone and the offer Tony.  Stockley looks like a winner if it is available.  I do not want to bother a club or a member when it is very possible a pub may be more attractive than golf.  I am looking forward to Buda.
