Bandon's Next Trick
« on: August 02, 2010, 09:04:18 AM »
One of the brilliant thing that I think Mike Keiser has done with Bandon is to bring on a new course every couple of years to entice golfers back.

Just based on what I have read it looks like this will continue with the Conservation Course.  After that it appears he will build a Hanse course down in the town of Bandon.  From there it appears there will be a nine hole course over by Whiskey Run road.

I wonder what he will do after all of those are complete.  Not that he has to do anything given how great things will be at that point.

I am surprised that there hasn't been anything else built in Oregon (other than Bandon Crossing) to pick up some of the overflow.

Steve -

By building these additional courses, Mike Keiser is basically picking up "the overflow" himself. Given the cash flow Bandon is likely generating and Mr. Keiser's deep pockets, it would take someone with a great deal of confidence (or someone rather foolhardy) to attempt to compete with Bandon in its backyard.

The resort needs a casino...every great resort has a casino...and indoor/outdoor pools with a divider that you can swim under.

Well, you could always play Sandpines (Golf Digest's #1 new course you can play, 1992)  ;)

Steve -

Do you know the timeline for the projects you mention?

I don't think even Mr. Keiser knows the timeline for those projects, exactly.

Is there more lodging planned?

What is the number of on-site beds available?

Or is the plan to have off-property beds (and non-Kaiser money) take the risk of unfilled rooms during off peak seasons?

Where in the town of Bandon will the Hanse course be located?

What's the concept behind the par 3 course and the 9-hole course?  Are these supposed to appeal to a different demographic (e.g., women, children, seniors) or are these more relief courses for the core market?

The Par 3 course is for relief for their core audience.

Not sure on the 9 hole course.  I think that is all the land that is left.  I don't think there is enough from for 18 holes.

In the latest version of "Dream Golf", Stephen Goodwin says that the plan is to make one of these a public course that is extremely affordable to locals, with local play essentially being subsidized by expensive greens fees charged to out-of-towners
