Thanks for the progress reports. I'll be there the last week of March. Can't wait to play the new 6 and 7.

Congratulations to Lance Gimbal of San Francisco for recording the first Hole-In-One on the new hole. Lance used a gap wedge from the white tees playing 126 yards.

The ace was recorded on Sunday morning after the hole opened on Friday. Pretty quick for the first ace.

And so begins the destruction of a hole Jim Lipe once described as one of his favorite holes in the world during a rather uncomfortble tour of the golf course back in 2004.

All of the area contained in the photo will be reshaped and incorporated into the approach of the new hole.

The demo in process - the bunker being removed here will be the beginning of the fairway at roughly the current bunker floor level

The work behind the old 6th green strtas to reveal the new green in the distance. We will bring everything down to the level of the granite shelf and proceed from there.

Bunkering on hole 6

Back central bunker

Back right bunker

View of both and the rock that spearates or really sits within one large bunker - view from back of green

Front left bunkers... probably grass the DG slope between rocks dow to the natural granite about halfway down the slope

Not quite the finihed product but pretty good sense of the hole. Both the right and left sides have to be finished and we actually grassed much of the left side today after toying the idea of a "beach bunker" concept. From the tips (185) this one will be anything from a 6-7 iron to a hybrid with the prevailing wind coming at you from the right.

I just wrote a long response to this thread before my connection died and I lost it- UGH!  oh well....I played the course Monday and had the good fortune to meet Greg and famed golf photographer, and fellow Kingsley member, Larry Lambrecht, who I believe was in the process of taking these wonderful shots.  First off both the course and Greg's operation are first class from the moment you roll in through the excellent tacos at the turn (I recommend the Tacos Camarones) to the perfectly humidified Cohibas at the 19th hole.  This course is Exhibit A in Matt Ward's "folks dismiss Nicklaus' GCA without having played a representative sampling of his best work" argument.  I had high expectations and they were exceeded and my Nicklaus design worldview has been officially rocked.  We played in a solid 2-3 club wind and the course would have given any scratcher with attitude all he could handle from the tips yet was enjoyable for us mortals from 1 or 2 boxes up, a good sign.  The short par 4s in particular were very good (3, 11 & 14).  The conditioning was excellent as you'd expect at this price point.  The greens were fast and true and I particularly liked the quality of the sand which allowed for all sorts of shots to be played (large grain?).  My only quibble is with the rough.  Due to the warm weather grass necessity balls would stick and/or sink in the rough.  This left several decent approaches with a hack and hope situation and eliminated some ground game recovery options on occasion.  But anyone who goes to Cabo and doesn't play this track had best finesse the Tequila Volleyball.  It's well deserving of it's spot on all the lists.

As for the new holes-as Greg said the new 6th wasn't quite ready to go yet, but it looks really good up close.  It's on a fantastic spit of land.  I did play the new 7th with the front pin shown above and miraculously knocked it to a foot.  There's a small sideboard on the right hand side of the small front section of the green.  However,  more often in the breeze balls will either come up short and left, leaving a difficult up and down proposition or on the rear section of the green leaving an even more difficult 2 putt.  Mind you the hole only played about 125 yards from the blues but this could be anything from a sand wedge to a 6 iron depending on the breeze which really blows on the exposed piece of land these holes are on.  Not to mention that this is some of the most scenic golf you're going to see anywhere.  Hell, on number 7 you're basically playing on the beach!!

Consider me officially converted Matt.  And thanks again for all the hospitality Greg, keep up the good work!

Jud, Thank you for the kind words - I will pass them along to the staff. I must admit that I was a bit worried when we encountered your group on the 8th tee and your playing companion zereod in on me with a question that rarely foreshadows anything positive "Do you run this place?"... was surprised and happy to hear the resulting complient he offered as folks rarely go out of their way these days to offer up praise. Congrats on conquering the new 7th (6th)... did you drain the one footer?  ;)

In terms of the rough I know exactly what you are saying and perhaps you noticed a fair amount of off color grass around the greens (and some fairways) as with the help of Jim Lipe we are re-establishing the grass lines on each hole with a partcular atention to the green surrounds where numerous runouts and chipping areas had been lost over the years due to careless mowing practices. Once completed the green surrounds will once again have far more options than you encountered this week.

Wish I had been able to sneak out and play but wearing quite a few hats these days...

Will be staying (and playing) at Cabo del Sol March 23 - 31. Can't wait to see the new 6th and 7th at the Ocean.

Have loved Cabo for last 15 years. One great thrill was to take the 1st tee at El Dorado (pre-redo) and the starter say, "See that group in the fairway?" He pointed to a large contingent with six carts. "That's Jack. He's playing the course, tweaking some things, and doing a photo shoot." My Dad and I played 18 behind Nicklaus and friends. On one par 3, Jack putted out and watched us come up. I promptly put it in the water.

Does anyone know if it's possible to play Diamante now that it's gone private?

Bret,

I think you can play a preview round if you're a prospective buyer or if you stay over.  It's well worth the effort IMO and the sales pitch is less aggressive than most as it's a fairly high-end development.  Frankly, you'll want to buy a place there after playing the course...

Jud -

When were you last at Diamante?  Have they started Phase I of the buildout yet?

Eric Evans is a good buddy of mine, and i hope to get down there again soon.  I loved the golf course.

Can't wait to see the new holes at Cabo del Sol as well.

Bobby, They have completed three villas with a couple at the front side of the range and one at the back end. They are selling lots in three different neighborhoods, Sunset Hills, Golf Village and Beach Estates.

Strangely enough(in this economy) they say they are going to move forward on a second course which would be an outparcel to a separate developer that would include hotel, sports complex and a water amenity called "Crystal Lagoon". The golf course and all land planning reportedly being done by frequent GCS contributor and the guy really responsible for the Dunes Course, Paul Cowley. Should be interesting and I am sure Paul will chime in when appropriate.

Not sure I woudl publish the fact that Erik is a good buddy! Just kidding we hang out on ocassion.

Bret, give me a call when you arrive and I'll help you get setup at Diamante. You will have to sit through a 90 minute presentation and pay $306 but you can access the course. The presentation is not quite as pain free as Jud suggests but they do have some interesting sales options. Weekly, monthly, full ownership... all include access to the Dunes Course. These sales tee times are usually limited to afternoon times after sitting through the presentation. No presentation required here at Cabo del Sol and would like to hear your thoughts on the new holes.

Greg-

Yeah, I played in a pro-am with Mr. Evans in Mesquite...and know him from his days at LA.  All i can say is ask him what a Mesquite 5 looks like, and something about a baby seal.  Wow...that was a fun trip.

I'll look you up next time i'm down there.

Bobby,

I was there over Christmas right before they officially went private.  Probably the best new course I've played in a while on a great piece of property.  I'd imagine the wind on the ocean side can get over the top on occasion.  Also some of the best on-course food and drink you'll find anywhere.  Frankly, I need another crack at it.  See the attached thread:

Great job on posting the construction process of both holes.  I haven't rely posted in awhile but this thread has caught my eye.  I am definitely making plans to c to play  the course and see these holes and a few other courses in Cabo.    Thanks again  for sharing the pics.
